So I finally got around to trying this out on my Linksys WRT54G (version 8.0) and the flash was successful. The documentation for the process wasn't as clear as I would have liked but I read it over a few times before attempting it and it seemed to be enough to get me through it.

I ran a before and after benchmark on SpeedTest and even though the new firmware is faster, its by such a small margin that I'm sure if I ran it several more times the average would be about the same. Still the main reason I tried it out was to see if it would be more stable with the PS3 over WiFi, and also in the future if I get a new router I'll be able to use this one as a wireless bridge. I won't know for a while if the stability is better now but hopefully it is, because with the original firmware it wasn't *that* bad really and usually I don't mess with things like this that are already working fine.

So has anyone else tried this yet and what are your thoughts? I was originally going to flash to the Tomato firmware, which I heard good things about, but after getting into the documentation I saw that my version of the router wasn't supported.

I've used both DDWRT and Tomato and they're both great ways to turn a cheap router into near enterprise level. My current DIR-615 is running it. UPnP works perfectly, when it didn't with OFW, port forwarding options are the same but more techie friendly, QoS works like it should, and the interface is great as well, even though I don't have to look at it too often anymore.

With certain routers this firmware can also turn your router into an access point and do mds.

I'm actually not taking advantage of most of the new features this has unlocked yet but I'm still happy with it. My PS3 seemed to connect right away last night as soon as it was turned on and didn't lose the connection the whole time I was playing. I'm used to seeing that damn box in the top right-hand corner all the time saying I've been signed out of PSN or a new connection was found etc. My girlfriends laptop seems to connect to the wireless slightly faster now, and I'm downloading a game on Steam at 1.1MB/S with a peak rate of 1.3MB/S... I forget what I usualy get as I don't get games from Steam all that often but at the very least I'm probably not getting worse performance.

I should also mention that doing other things on the net while downloading from Steam seems just as fast as not having the download going.
