Hey Guys, Have a simple question about running network cables that I am arguing with my head office over. Heres the scenario, I need to run (3) Cables approx 50' away from switch, and (1) cable 100' from switch. My plan is to simply have the cables cut appropriate lengths and have ends crimped directly on the cable device <->Cable<->switch The network "guru" at the office says to run the cables terminate in keystone boxes, then run patch cables to the devices? ...My question is WHY? Device<->patch cable <-> box <->cable <-> box <->patch cable<-> switch Hopefully you guys can tell me if he is just blowing smoke. As far as running the cables and possibly replacing them if there are faults, Is not a problem as the cables will just be run through a hung ceiling. so replacing them isn't as difficult as if they were run through walls. Thanks for the comments |

I can see him wanting it done to reduce the risk of damaging the cables. I find what typically breaks is the connector, but you can always just re-crimp. But if you screw up the cable you would be looking at replacing 100' of cable over say, 6'. So it is noticeably cheaper to replace 6' instead. But either way will work. I would personally terminate the cables to boxes or patch panels too. Just the way I like to have it done. |

As long as this "Guru" is paying for the equipment, who cares! I can see just in case to keep them at 50' lengths, as 100' is kinda long. Shielded, or non-shielded? Will this be running along with some random power or phone cables as well? How sensetive is the information running along these cables? |

The thing is though that 100" cable is going to be running 100" whether its one continuous cable, or multiple segments. I can see him wanting to do this in case there's an issue with a damage cable and only needing to replace a small segment rather than the whole thing (as mentioned before) but if he's worried about the length I would think he'd want it sections so he could put in a box that repeats the signal at some point but he didn't seem to mention that to you. If it was me though I would follow what he says and keep a copy of his e-mail if you can. Its better not to rock the boat too much unless it's more important but also keep something to cover you "ace" in case someone else questions it. |

I read it that he is fine with the 100' segment in the ceiling, and then just from the patch panel/outlet to the device. But your explanation makes sense too. |

Same opinion here, I would terminate to patch panels if it were an option. Obviously you could run the lengths suggested. If you're using anything PoE you'll need to keep it under 350 feet though. |

The general practise is to run wire out of sight and to nice looking plugs to keep a place from looking shabby. More or less a matter of pride in doing the job right. |
