Prepare for a tax of upto 75.00 and possibly more for Ipods and personal mp3 devices.
Tax will increase as size of storage.

So if you don't pick them up now... Face the wrath of the govt!!!

This was just on Canada AM today.

That's good!

I only seen the atricle of them planning to implement it.

Was rediculous nonetheless

A similar debate/"solution" was proposed years ago for blank CD's where it would be assumed that you were using the CD to pirate music/movies before you even did anything with it. The main problem I see with these kinds of solutions, not even looking into the moral dilemma of pre-crime (the next post will be Cmdr Steve-O quoting that and posting a Minority Report movie poster no doubt ;)) are:

1) If the individual is paying for what they are "going to do" then shouldn't they be allowed to do it afterwords? This seems like a way for the industries to double dip in which they get compensating for their loses and can still seek out and sue people into oblivion who do what they're getting taxed for doing. It's a win-win for them and a lose-lose for the customer.

2) I'm not 100% on this one, and I'm sure argument can be made to the contrary, but when the industries make money in this sort of way what obligates them to pass on a percentage of it to the actual artists other than for the "moral" reason? It seems to me when the RIAA/FIAA (and their Canadian equivalents) successfully sue someone the money just goes to their bottom line rather than distributed to all the people who helped make the actually product which was stolen. The money distribution may have been part of the tax proposal, and in which case this point is invalid but something tells me the industries point of view is "When we make money we pass it on to our clients"... <sarcasim> which I'm sure they do.</sarcasim>

Pre-crime is RETARDED.

Are we not allowed to make a copy of purchased cd's for our own use? If I buy a cd/dvd then I reserve the right to make a copy in case the original is scratched/damaged. Laws now are more severe for copyright than they are for obviously more serious crimes.

If I buy it - its mine to do with as I please to an extent. As long as I dont make money off of the purchase or distribute.

But if I want to make a copy to put on my MP3 player..hell I bought it....so..

Too many people given just a little authority for some reason or another attempt to implement changes without thinking things thru - Knobs.

It might be different here than in the States but the last time I've heard we weren't even allowed doing that technically. In one of the RIAA vs. [Some poor shmoe whose going to get sued for damages in excess of a 1000 times more than the value of what was "stolen"] the representative for either Sony or the RIAA (can't remember off-hand) said on the stand that making personal copies for the reasons you stated above was the same as saying "I just stole one copy".

Ha! I don't see myself ever getting one either. Even the iPod Touch doesn't appeal to me and the thought of having to use iTunes for it makes me puke a little bit in my mouth.

...and I thought I was the only one that puked a lil at the thought.

lol

I would have to confirm those are the same laws in Canada. As long as you do not profit, or distribute the music, I dont see how you are breaking any law.

I agree that it's how things should be, but whether or not they are is another story.

On a semi-related note, did anyone else hear that the game industry wants to include EULA's or laws that block the buying and selling of used games? I don't know how every other industry in existence is able to survive without laws like this forcing people to always go back to the original manufacturer for goods so I'm going to side with the gaming industry on this one...

Well as much as I like free software. I would not like to be a developer who is losing millions of dollars as well on people burning, reselling, etc. games.

when it somes to economy and the RIGHT thing. I would have to agree unfortunately as everyone has to make a living.

the only thing I dont agree with is what is mentioned above. Like Cd's

Oh no, I'm talking about legit games here; not copies. Like when EB Games has deals where you can trade in old games and get money off new ones and stuff. That's what they're trying to stop.
