I haven't terminated cat5e since my course and even then I never done it much. Anyone have a significant experience in doing so that can give me a hand in doing my house soonish? All the wires are routed just need a good fella to do the terminations. Cheers B |

yeah - same as me, not since college. Its not hard man, It's not hard, look at one that's done and mimic it. Crimp and go on to the next. few sets of hands doing that and you'd be done in no time. |

What, only Cat5? Cat6 is the future! Dude when I get off work come over, as long as you got a crimper and the ends, no problem. |

It's cat5e but it's run all through the house already. Cat5e is good enough for Gigabit anyways. Or maybe im rusty being on this laptop for the past while.. But nevertheless I need a wired connection on a wall panel so I can rig up the online for my ps3 because lets face it. Wireless is just not as good when it comes to console online play.. We're moving on the 26th-27th. After that i'll get some beer if you wanna help crimp them up. I gotta do the outlets and all. It's already run through the entire house. |

Yeah, I wired my parents new house with Cat5e, phone (Cat3) coax, HDMI, and speaker wire for the TV room, that was pretty fun, and very spaghetticable as well. But it's worth having zero wires hanging around. If you want to do it all "proper" like, all the crap I got from Home Depot will do the job for ya. http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=1&srchFor=Brand&Ntk=level1&langId=-15&Dx=mode%20matchall&storeId=10051&Ntx=mode%20matchall&N=119205+4294965643&catalogId=10051&Nty=1 Cost 300$ for the wiring and about the same for all the outlet stuff. But that was 300' of coax, and 200' of CAT5e and 3, 200' of speaker wire and 17 outlets with the hookups. http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?langId=-15&storeId=10051&catalogId=10051&N=0&Ntk=level1&Ntt=omega%20keystone&Nty=1&D=omega%20keystone&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&s=true The dongle thingies are expensive in singles but they are decent price in 6 packs or whatever. |

Yeah they are kent wanted 16.99 each! good to know home depot is alot cheaper. I;ll see what they are at cost at kent nevertheless. Do you need a crimping tool for the Cat5e plugs or is it tool free? |

You don't need to crimp with the home depot ones. If you've ever hooked up residential phone lines in a house, it's pretty much the same, just follow the colour coding. Only if you want to make actual male ends withs the leftovers, would you want a crimper. Is it just cat5 or is there coax in the plugs as well? What the heck kinda house you moving into, a non-built one yet? |

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding or not, but what you're doing should be really easy if you buy some cat5e snap-ins and face plates. I rewired the studio I'm currently working at and it really wasn't that hard. If you've got to fish all the wire through the walls that can be a bit of a pain but there are a number of things that can make that easier. Oh, and you can buy plastic wall mounts for low voltage to secure the face plates to the drywall if you are only doing coax and cat5e...I think I even have a bunch of stuff out in my truck if you'd like to see examples. Drop me a PM if you'd like. |

A bit of a thread hyjack here but while we're talking about wiring houses could I ask how difficult/what tools would I need, to run speaker wire through some walls? I was planning on getting an electrician to do it, because I want it done right, whether it's by me or someone I pay. |

CMDR Steve-O wrote: Finished or unfinished? Finished... and one of the walls is an outter wall with insulation... I'm assuming that makes this whole thing a lot more tricky. |
