So looks like i'm getting eastlink hooked up again soon here at my cousins place. Is it worth it to get the Extreme 15 or should I just get reg high speed. All I do is DL some movies time to time & game online.

hmm..one day when I moved into our current apt, we were just xferring the cable to a diff apt - they upgraded us to extreme 15 @ no extra cost. I would ask about deals

This isn't a "reconnection" though. I'm paying off my cousins bill & having hers re-hooked back up. No sense hooking it up in my name when I don't know how long for sure i'm going to be here right.

I'm thinking seeing as all upload speeds are the same regardless what I go for & don't absolutely need lightning fast DL speeds only for DL the odd movie that reg high speed might be best. I guess lol.

One must ask themselves if the extra money is worth the extra bandwidth, specifically if YOUR time is worth the wait.

Do you find yourself having to wait for downloads that would have you otherwise be doing other things?

Time is money and my own time is worth lots of money (to me).

The other factor is for the number of boxes in your house and the possibility all these boxes will be sucking the bandwidth concurrently.

Based upon the mention of downloading movies, I don't think you will see any significant decrease in time.

All that will be on it is my box & the odd time my cousins laptop but she has a 2yr contract for this stupid slow as shit Rogers rocket stick crap so she won't be on mine much at all.

With the amount that i'm on uploading to game servers DL anything unless i'm asleep won't be an issue. When i'm awake & on the comp I will be uploading to game servers not DL anything.

5 Megabits = 500 Kilobytes

15 Megabits = 1.5 Megabytes

Personally, the 15Mbit service is great for me. I download all my movies and games from Usenet though @ 1.5Mbit and its fantastic.

Gaming is affected solely because when there are a lot of players ina given server, it requires much more bandwidth to update their position etc.

15Mb is worth every penny for me...

But its a cost vs luxury thing in the end

my ping is the same to the servers I use no matter what service I have so I guess it really doesn't matter which I go with.

I lived with a guy who worked with Aliant for a few summers and he knew a lot about Eastlink's systems (since they were the competition) and he said that for apartment buildings Eastlink can't give regular speed cable to some units and 15 Megabit to others without physically rewiring the buildings so basically if one person in the building pays for 15 Megabit internet everyone else using Eastlink Internet there gets it for free. We ended up getting regular internet and sure enough in our Eastlink speed tests we were getting results you'd expect from the 15 Megabit plan. I'm not sure if your situation was the same but it sounds like it, although I would think they would want to keep that on the down low.

More than likely. No I'm in a trailer park for now so it's probably different. Might be here for awhile might not who knows. All depends on what the future holds & how sane I can remain staying here lol. Going from living alone with my pup to living with a female relative, her 10yr old daughter, a weiner dog, a chirpin budgie, girl mess & yelling that i'm not used to. My room isn't ready cause some renovations still need to be finished. I haven't brought my pup here yet cause I was waiting to have my own room set up before I did so I could keep the dogs seperated when we weren't here ect. Sorry for the slight rant just pointing out that soon as I am ble to flee from this situation I plan to lol.

well..that does explain why when we moved here we got upgraded to 15 for free.

We are moving to a much larger split level in a couple weeks. hope its 15 there too.

You don't have to answer this but are you living there by choice or is this because of your money situation you mentioned before in other threads? If this is the case I wouldn't even be thinking of paying more for faster internet. :(

It's both. I moved in to help my cousin out as well as myself. We need a house phone hooked up regardless so why not pay the extra bit & get the net hooked up as well. It would cost me $40-50 per month just to use my cell phone so why do that when I can pay less for a house phone right. The extra bit towards net is just a bonus to cure me of my boredom & to keep me sane while i'm here at home. Plus I have obligations that I need to continue with in our gaming servers ect. that i've not been able to help out with since I moved here right.

Not sure why I didn't think of this before but I just ordered Bell-Aliant online. Confirmed hookup date is Nov 3rd. See what happens between now & then. I can't remember if I had an old bill or not with them. I couldn't get the Max in my area so I got the ultra. It will do! Any hints or tips what to ask for as far as modem is concerned.... I've heard from many the combo modem-routers are garbage.

Well - If you have to install aliant software to get online - opt out of that. Ask the tech to manually type in your ip in the modem so that you are online 24/7 without having to use the software to connect.

I did this for my dad cause i was tired of seeing him going thru the aliant software. Its really easy to do this in the modem, all you need is the modem's IP and internet explorer lol

you can also type in the username and pass in the modem to stay connected 24/7.
