Is it a virus or spyware?

If it's a virus run any software you have or try a PCCillin online scan. Personally, I find anti-virus software doesn't actually stop much from getting on your system but what it does do is let you know which virus you are dealing with. Once I get the name of the virus I usually head over to Symantec's site to see if they have a virus removal tool for the virus in question. They are usually small executable files that take care of the work for you but you have to follow a few instructions which are pretty easy. If you're lucky you'll find a tool on the site but if not you'll have to Google the name of the virus and hope someone else has some step-by-step instructions for manually removing it.

If it's spyware try running Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. They both seem to pick up on different objects that are running so most of the time you really need to run both. Hopefully they'll pick up a few things which you can then remove but sometimes that isn't enough and this is where knowing your MSCONFIG start up files helps. If you've remved everything and you're still getting pop-ups I usually then run MSCONFIG and go to the startup tab and start unchecking anything that looks suspecious. Reboot and see if that helps. Sometimes these programs will be loaded in folders like "Microsoft" but it will be placed somewhere weird like your My Documents folder so that should raise alarms.

Anyways, if you have any more questions let me know. I'm not the greatest at fixing these problems but I have owned a computer that had to be plugged in to a university campus network so I've done my fair share of virus removal. :(

Oh and GL and GG. ;)

Hey Tony,

A little information on what you received would be highly handy to determine what your PC caught.

If you can provide the information I know many of us on here wouldn't mind helping you in the removal of your virus / spyware.

Well I went & tried to install McAfee to try & rid myself of this worm( I think) & part way through it froze my computer completely so I shut it down & restarted. I tried that 8 more times & it froze at start up every time. So I lost everything by reformatting earlier this evening. Never again will I get that. Pain in the ass.

AVG Free.. I've been using it for a few years now. Its gotten fairly good reviews and its certainly better than nothing. No one likes to re-install when you didn't buy something new. :D

Really nasty virus' will often prevent anti-virus software from installing on the machine so it's always good to have it installed before you catch something. ;)

I've used Kaspersky SOS to clean lots of computers that people thought were broken beyond recognition.
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
It's free to use at least once.
Never had an issue with it yet, always finds the crap and lets you clean it out when its done (unlike virus scanners that freak out as soon as they find something with the "ZOMG VIRII!1!!bbq!" screen. That is so annoying, like you have to sit there and watch it scan the whole time instead of letting you deal with it when its done. Chances are the virus has been there for a while, sitting quietly for another hour or so while the scan finishes won't kill anybody. /rant)

One of the guys I work with used to be down in the States working for an anti-virus company a few years ago and they really liked Kaspersky there as well. Apparently anything based on the F-Secure engine did well by their standards and Kaspersky was one of them.
