depends on if your gaming or doing video encoding. the x2 will be faster playing games since everything is being optomized for dual core cpu's and quads will be better doing video encoding.

Wait for the newer Phenom 9x50's to come out at a lower price point, possibly even one of the tri-cores would be a viable option (but they are still on B3 stepping though).

The price drop is coming on the 7th, and I/m not privvy as to when MB is going to have any sort of quantities in stock, but it shouldn't take long.

If by schoolwork you mean things like typing papers, powerpoint presentations, etc ("office" stuff), then the dual core is more than adequate. Also the dual core is more than adequate for gaming (when combined with a good vid card of course).

You could wait a bit for price drops as cmdr suggests, but if you can't wait, go with the dual core.

I would definitely say quad. If you multi-task a lot, you'll notice a difference.

I'm going to have my Hyper6 available next week but I'm not sure if it'll fit an AM2 or not. I know it fits AMD K8 (socket 754/940) and Intel P4 (socket 478) for sure though.

If a person isn't planning on overclocking much, the AC7 pro line of coolers is amazing price/performance.

As far as the Hyper6 performance goes... is that the original Hyper6 or a Hyper6+????

I had the Hyper6+ on a S939 3700+ and it managed to bring it up over 3G within acceptable temp limits so I'd give it a thumbs up for performance.... :)
