Just saw this in hfx.general

Quote:
Newsgroup Service Message

Effective April 14, 2008 EastLink is discontinuing its binary newsgroup
service (all non-text files). EastLink will continue to offer its text
based newsgroup service.

Questions and Answers

Why is EastLink discontinuing the binary service?

EastLink's Newsgroup Service provider has chosen to discontinue the binary
service based on declining usage and changing technology; therefore EastLink
will no longer offer the service.

I would say this has more to do with blocking copyrighted material than a lack of use.

I'm not positive, but don't newsgroups require the ISP to provide server space for them?

With the advent of P2P apps there aren't a lot of folks still using newsgroups so I suspect the server space (and bandwidth to populate the server) for what is probably a select few users is the main driving issue.
