"I think you're looking at the last generation of game consoles, and I think it's easy to defend that position,"

is it the end of consoles?

his entire arguemnt seems to be hinged on the fact that the only platform for "community based" games is the PC. in the time table he's talking about i am positive that those types of games will be fully available on consoles. already consoled can go online to obtain additional content, and play in competition with other players. so something like WoW for consoles is not far fetched (if it doesn't exist already).

consoles may change and evolve, but they will not be disappearing any time soon. if anything they will become almost Mac-like in being closed systems that are basicly operated as computers, but are non-upgradable and have no OS beyond some basic firmware that won't be updated and everything will be designed to work on that one closed system. in a somewhat unrefined way consoles can already do that with certain flavours of linux.

death of consoles? ha

I'm gonna disagree with this guy, i don't play my x box much, but they are a valuable source of entertainment with friends over and such. also i think they will start to become more human involvement, such as we see already with the Nintendo Wii.

I own a nintendo wii, it was great fun for probably 6 months however, i dont think i have touched it in a month or so. not saying consoles are dead, i just think that pc gaming has a longer life time. with a pc itds not only gaming, but hardware seems to run hand and hand. and with buying the latest and greatest hardware, a user also tries to push he limits, i.e. overclocking...

I'd disagree with you only a small portion of users go and over clock, modify, or upgrade their systems themselves. Most people don't even have the basic concept of overclocking. Consoles will be around and so will PC gaming.

Consoles are great entertainment if you have a group of people over, nothing better then having a few drinks while smashing the hell out of your controller. PC gaming is big, and will continue, but I don't see a decline in console gaming, especially with games comming out that involve more human based interaction. Ie rock band, guitar hero, etc.

I agree, i am just stating my personlf beliefs...perhaps because i am one who ventures to buying equipemnt (maybe not the latest and greatest) but i try and overclock and push the limits...

I remember reading a comment a while ago (before the PS3 was released) from some bigwig at Sony that they were already planning the PS4 and PS5 timeframes as well. Given about 5 year lifespan per console as the flagship unit would put the timetable to about 2016, at least.

What they do and how they go about doing it is anyones guess.

As long as they keep making money at it, there is no reason for them to stop. Altough it will probably take the full 5 years for these current consoles (minus the Wii) to overall break even.
