All I know at the moment for sure is that the Core i5 CPU will run on socket 1156, will have a TDP of 95W, features 4 cores and will run on a integrated dual channel memory controller. So some of the downfalls are: Anyone who has a i7 CPU will not purchase this due to extensive hardware changes. It will have 4 cores minus hyperthreading. -edit- As far as I know thee will be HT just not on the cheapest models. The memory bandwidth will be lower of course but latency shouldn't be affected. Slower on anything where you can use multipe cores. IE: Rendering, transcoding, benching, etc. Pros: Should be pretty much the same for anyone gaming as most games are still utilizing 2 cores. It will be cheaper for the hardware (Hopefully) Runs cooler Less TDP at 95W Runs cooler (But anyone who has owned a i7 knows how much heat HT produces. Anyhow I was thinking of building a i7 system for games but the i5 may be my route now. My suggestion is currently to anyone who is reading reviews is not to believe the overclocking and benches. This happens every time a new product comes out and the reviewers get the cherry chips that do 5 ghz on air, no problem in 5 minutes of trying. Hopefully once out we can see some average joe results and go form there. "According to reports, the upcoming 2.66, 2.8 and 2.93 GHz chips will have support for the Turbo Boost technology which will enable single-core overclocks of up to 3.2, 3.46 and 3.6 GHz respectively. In terms of prices, the CPUs would go for $196, $284 and $562, with the cheapest part, the 2.66 MHz model, set to not include features like Hyper Threading, vPro and TXT, which will be found on the 2.8 and 2.93 GHz Lynnfields. Shortly after releasing these three processors, Intel is expected to deliver its first 32nm CPUs." |

I'll be using S775 until such a time as it doesn't cost 1K to upgrade - mobo, ram, cpu, it get's pricey. |

considering I sold my i7 rig. Im still not sure as I have enoguh on my plate of course. If this rumor of a pay raise comes we will certainly see another rig built. |

looks nice, but as the doc said to pricey for that extra frame per second |

After seeing some info in this thread I checked out a preliminary review of the i5. Cherry picked cpu's is right. Getting well over 4Ghz ( 4.4 if memory serves) from one thats stock @ 2.6 seems a lil far fetched - especially when they made it sound so easy and they only had a cooler sitting ( un-clamped ) on it for cooling, with the fan removed. Smells like a strong dose of hype to me. Being an AMD Fanboy I will be sticking with AMD. Less performance yes - albeit very comparable to Intel but far less cost. It is very nice however to see a less than 100Watt quad cpu. The 'expected' price is the $200 range , not bad. Then again if I made an i7, downclocked it, then sold it, it would use less power and have amazing overclocking headroom. kidding. I am looking forward to seeing real world results from the store bought i5's. |
