I have a brand new D-LINK DIR-615 router on my eastlink connection and when downloading files from Easynews I constantly get disconnected from the news server. In firefox I get the error source file can't be read and when using getright to download i get server busy errors. However if I go direct from PC to modem I can download without problems. It's only with the router that I'm having trouble. Speeds on both are great. Is it a faulty router or am I missing something?

I have the same router. No problems with usenet access. Routers die. Try reloading firmware or even flash it with DD-WRT

My easynews subscription is web based or well that is what I use anyways. If I download on port 80 I get disconnected from the server constantly .. if I download on port 81 no disconnects at all but speeds are slow. Perhaps I'll return the router and get a new one to try.

Ya, if it's new I would definitely try returning it first before resorting to DD-WRT.

Going to return it in a few mins .. DD-WRT doesn't work well with this revision of the 615 ... it will get stuck in a reboot loop according to the reports on the forums.

Returned the router and the new one has the exact same problems .. I guess perhaps I gotta try a different kind of router .. perhaps a linksys or something.

Try disabling QoS Packet Scheduling for your NIC. I had a DLink that didn't seem to like that at one point.

Ports 80 and 81 are NOT safe ports to be downloading from newsgroups. Get yourself a newsreader (alt.binz is free and very feature rich) and SSL connection thru Easynews if they support it, if not then try these guys out: http://astraweb.com/ (one of the cheapest providers and it has very high binary retention)

To reiterate, port 80 is reserved for web traffic, which means anything you're passing through that port is easily snoopable by ISPs and other parties. I can't stress enough the need for multiple SSL connections when downloading from newsgroups.

Easynews has SSL .. I almost always use that but for the purpose of trouble shooting I went with reg port 80 and 81 to eliminate SSL as being the culprit.

Well I think I may have found part of the problem. The router has a "WAN Speed Select" option .. if I select Auto 10/100 I get great speeds but disconnects if I choose straight 10 I get very slow speeds but no disconnects if I choose straight 100 I get no disconnects but speeds are still slower than on Auto but if I use getright and open 2 connections i can get around 1MB/sec or if I open 4 I can get 1.5 mb/sec.

Eastlink is bad bad bad for not working properly with many routers (something about multicast).

You (should) have 4 IP addresses allocated to you. As long as you don't need wireless you can just set up a gigabit switch to directly to your cable modem. Hook up the router and up to 3 other devices/computers to the switch.

Oh, and Eastlink now gives out IPv6 addresses, as of last weekend.
