Post subject:  Looking to upgrade .. need suggestions

Well after having troubles with this Asus PK5 motherboard for years now I guess it's time to replace it. I have a problem with it after restarts or shutdowns that it all of a sudden says one of my hard drives is bad (same one each time) but I can put the same drive in another system and it checks out fine and works great. It might just randomly start working in the asus and work for 8 months flawlessly then just randomly crap again. Changed sata cables, ports, etc and still same issue. It will startup but then as soon as the bios detects it the drive will power down.

I would like to just replace the motherboard to keep my same ram but the chances of doing that is slim so here's what I got for parts now .. any suggestions on what to do that wont break the bank are appreciated. Keep in mind all I do is video editing and encoding. Building around the Power supply and video card is a must at this moment.

You would be one of the few then that would benefit from Sandy bridge.

You're probably better off getting a Sandy <sic> Bridge getup with DDR3. Something along the lines of a 2500K. Oh, and as a common theme this week...get 8GB of RAM!

The cheapest option is to get a new LGA775 motherboard, but it appears only G41 and G43 chipsets are presently available. Going to either a new AMD or Intel setup will require a mobo/cpu/DDR3 upgrade. The new Sandy's are scary fast and pretty cheap.
(compared to the previous generation anyway)

Yeah I know .. went on Ebay to try and find another P5K but all I could find is Manufacturer refurbished boards .. worth taking a chance on ya think? Only $50 and would be so simple I could just install it and keep everything the same no need for a reinstall of windows or nothing.

Going from one Intel chipset to another generally doesn't require an OS install. I don't think I did a re-install when I went from P5B to P5Q but that would have been on XP. There's a few things you need to do to make sure it works though.

I'd be carefull with a re-furb.

I saw some G31 boards that would probably be compatible with the P35 drivers.

I know it is not much help, but there is someone interested in purchasing the server that I'm selling and if they buy it that is going to fund my sandy bridge upgrade. Once that happens I will have a P5K-E up for sale.

But then again a lot has to fall in place for that to happen first right? So if you are not in a rush it might work out for you. But I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Yeah I would love to be able to buy another board with the same chipset too. Otherwise i'm going to have to do a major upgrade and I have to choose between that and a trip to Punta Cana. I so wanna go on a vacation but can't go without my desktop. lol

Funny thing. I would normally just run out and order the new gear for my upgrade but we are planning on going to Disney World with our kids in October so I can't afford it without selling off my server lol.

Well looks like my trip could be out anyways so now I'm seriously looking at one of the Sandy Bridge 2600k's. The speed of these for encoding and editing video is amazing. I'm assuming my current PSU wouldn't handle the task so I'm going to need to get a new one.

So long as you don't go crazy with the OC or GPU it should be OK

Sorry to hear. I'll think about you when I'm in the Bahamas in March though. ;)

I think my plane ticket to Northern Ontario is costing more than it would for one to the Carribean (maybe not, heh). Oh the price I pay to go ice fishing for a week :P
