This is what is currently on my dream machine list. AMD PHENOM 9600 (Non-Black) $239.00 Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 $221.00 OCZ PC2-8000 DDR2 Reaper X Dual Channel w/EPP 1000MHz (2x2GB) 4GB Kit 5-5-5-18 X 2 $354.00 WD Raptor 150G $209.00 Sapphire ATI Radeon HD3870x2 $498.00 MITSUMI FA404 (Black) 3.5" Floppy / 7-IN-1 USB $31.00 that's about 1550$ before taxes. All depends on the price drop on the 3870/3850's and how/when the Phenom 9900's come out at what price. Also depends on when/how much the 4870's will cost. Doesn't include a PSU or Case since I already have those, or a new monitor. Doesn't include OS, but it does have 8GB of RAM in it so Vista 64 would be the one. I am an AMD fanboi but the quad extreme from intel on a i790 chipset + a GX9800X2 cost 2000$ just for the 3 pieces. |

i'm weary of Phenom's, did they correct the freezing problem related to the L3? the other thing would be why AMD? there getting there butt handed to them by intels cpu and theres almost no price difference if you look around online. i just ordered a xeon e3110 for about $219 and seems to overclock past 4ghz almost 100% of the time. i'll let ya know my results, could be the cpu of choice with the e8400 nowhere to be found. |

I'll point you in the direction of my sig Constant 80+ FPS in COD4 with everything maxed at 1920x1200 resolution. It dips to 55-60 when I'm in heavy combat/smokey/intense areas, but it never gets stuttery in the slightest. |

There is No Reason for ANYONE to buy an AMD system right now . Now there is one more reason to, because you told me not to! I don't need anyone to tell me I'm cool, either. |

I wouldn't buy a Phenom at this point. Spend the few extra dollars to get a Q6600. |

After some thought & debate I wouldn't personally go with s quad but it all depends what you intend to do with it I guess. Why not go with a faster dual core that'll smoke a quad for speeds? I sometimes think it's all in the hype lol. |

like you said it depends on what your doing. a high end or overclocked dual core is better then a quad at this point for gaming and general use becuase most games aren't even dual core enabled not to even mention quad. but quads aren't hype if you do encoding or 3d work, in those cases a quad core will put up a very impressive improvment over the dual core. i recently faced this decision and went with a Xeon E3110(E8400) over the Q6600 becuase all i use it for personally is gaming and its a much faster gaming cpu. in about the next 2 years when games evolve more we may see this shift, but till then high end dual cores are the top gaming cpu. |
