Seagate ST31000340AS 1000GB Barracuda 7200.10 SATA-II 32MB (5YR MFG - 1YR MB) 1st yr Hot Swap

or

WD Caviar 1000GB 7200rpm 16M SATA (WD10EACS) (3YR MFG - 1YR MB

Oddly the Seagate is cheaper, but I've never had a WD fail on me.

Need a quick response. I'll be using it for UFI drive and raiding the 2 WD 500G's I have now for the OS's.

The 1GB for WD is 5,400 RPM. BUT it is also the quietest, coolest (temp) and uses the least power of the three, practically none when it's in idle.

I have no idea what UFI means. Must be a *nix term or something :P

If it's a drive with an OS on it I'd get the Seagate. But then again I don't buy anything BUT raptors for system drives. I have 3 of the WD 1TB drives and no problems.

We just had a Seagate Barracuda die today at work in our slave processing system... I'm not anti-Seagate or anything I just thought it was ironic that this question was asked just as I finished removing the drive. :)

Also, I've never had a WD fail as well. :)

I've had drives of every manufacturer (some of teh don't exist anymore hah!) drive fail over the past 15 years. It's a crapshoot sometimes you'll just get a lemon.

Useless Fluffying Information. Patches, drivers, map packs, utilities, MP3's, movies.

I've ordered the Seagate, it should be fine, if not there is the hot swap when it dies, we've had decent luck with them at work.

bear in mind that the seagate has a 32mb cache vs. the 16mb cache on the WD. so the seagate will perform better, although how noticable that will be, especially on a "UFI" drive, is debatable at best.

Too funny, the Seagate in my Win2K machine at work just went tit's up. I noticed all my b's were sagging (subscript) so I rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted, and rebooted. Then gave up.
