Actually I've heard you can run dual channel memory with 3 sticks. I've never done it myself but apparently the paired sticks will be used first in dual channel until the system needs more memory than is available by the pair and then it will go on to use the third stick in single channel.
I originally assumed 3 sticks would kick all of it out of dual channel as well, since most things with computers run at the speed/setting of the bottleneck, but apparently boards will mix and match single and dual channel memory configurations.
Just thought you'd like to know.
