So i got a laptop off eaby for a good price. got it mailed opened it up didn't work (The sellers ebay acc is suspended and paypal gone so i cant even dispute, it sucks so i wanna try to fix it). turns on says acer on the screen then shuts off. I removed the battery and it wont do nothing at all with only the ac plugged in. If i have the battery in and the ac adapter plugged in it flashes the acer logo on the screen then goes away.

this sounds like a dead motherboard to me. but what do you guys think maybe a long shot quick fix.

Im getting ready to order a new motherboard for it for about 180$ so any suggestions would be great.

Thanks guys!

well if it aint passing post - then definite hardware issue. I would re seat what you are able to hardware related to post and try again. see if u are able to get past post at least.

What doesnt sit well with me is the fact that you the power on issue when there is no battery connected which does point a finger somewhat to being motherboard related. Test until there is no other option than to try a new board.

You can't even get into the bios?

I bought an Acer laptop a couple years ago and after a week it started doing the exact same thing you are describing. I never bothered trying to figure it out though because I just took it back right away and got it replaced. Luckily in the two years I've had this new one I haven't had that problem again but I worry about it once in a while.

Hope you figure it out.

Apologies for the lack of grammar in my previous post. Perhaps I should do lunch break at a pub and drink dark rum before posting.

yeah i took the whole laptop apart looking for something out of place. cant find nothing physically wrong inside the laptop and used a multi meeter to check what connections i could and they all checked out. i cant get into bios . when i to turn it on it literally flashes the acer logo for .5 of a second then laptop turns off

i agree that is strange how the laptop will not do anything without the battery in it. makes me think its the motherboard.

i actually home all day today so im gonna try some more testing. too bad i dont have a laptop diagnostics card

yeah those diag cards are awesome. I used the desktop type from time to time with good results. When unsure if the board is dead, the card would tell you flat out.

sounds to me like the battery is mostly dead and the power brick is damaged or non-functional in some way.
try a universal power adapter if you can get your hands on one.

yeah it does sound like power adapter now that i think about it. and get some input from others like you guys. I am not a tech by no means.

battery + a/c adapter = power on then off
battery = power on then off
a/c adapter = NOTHING

Anyone know what MB would charge for a diagnostics on the laptop? denty wanna field this one for me? hit me with a price lol

diagnostic work is minimum of 25 dollar charge. now if you brought the laptop in and bring the old adapter we'd look at it. see if we have one to match (plenty of ac adapters in stock) and test it. takes like 30 secs. now lets just say if that fixes it and you buy the adapter theres no 25 charge
