I picked up some Gskill Memory, a 2 x1G dual channel 1066 Kit , later today I am picking up a 4 gig kit to go with it. The Memory is a PC2-8500 kit.

This machine will NOT boot if i run the memory @ 1066. At 800 its fine.

I checked Gskill's website to make sure I have all settings correct. Voltage, timings everything. Still no go. Its also listed with the board I am using so I am at a loss.

I tried everything from auto settings, to voltage changes from suggested 2-2.1v - tried auto timing and setting all of them up manually. It will not boot when boot screen shows it set to 1066. If hit the reset it will show 800 and boot.

Bastard! Suggestions for quick fix? Steve-o you use Gskill and the same board, Curious if you had any issues you have to iron out to get it running @1066

I should ad that I am using bios version 1705. There is one update and two beta updates available from asus however, on a several version of bios earlier than the one I am using, it fixed a possible 800 bios limit issue. So it wouldnt be a bios issue in case the question came up.

trfc 195ns

yes, a previous post by Steve-o

But I was just trying a 2 gig kit - 2 x 1G sticks so only two slots are being used.

It absolutely will not do 1066.

I put the ballistix tracer back in and away it goes without issue.

Problem Resolved. I had no idea that either my board or the ram or the combination would be so damn "finiky" over ALL the timing settings - but alas it is. Here is the fix for me @ 2.1v. I had to change the advertized 5-5-5-15 to 5-6-6-24 and manually enter the rest instead of leaving things to "auto". I will manually try to tighten this up to 5-5-5-15 in a little bit but I am running the G-skill now with no issues at the below values:

cas 5
trcd 6
trp6
tras 24

trc 32 reset from 30
trfc 195ns (was set to auto)

trrd 4 (was set to auto)
twr 6 (was set to auto)
twtr 10 (was set to auto)

4 more gigs to be arriving early evening - Cha-Ching!!

yeah i would def try to get the ram running at tighter timings for sure. 5-6-6-24 is pretty bad. try running your ram a bit under 1066. like 980 if your bios allows it, and drop your timings back to stock

I had a set of 1066 ram that wouldn't do 1066 either. but it did 1100 or 1050 no problem

The board doesnt allow me to set the ram for anything other than 400, 533, 667,800 or 1067Mhz.

I am guessing overclocking things would be a way to change it.

For now its working, that great to start as earlier, It wouldnt past post. I will work on the timings a little later when I get the other 4 gigs into this thing.

sbreeze, I am not sure without googling what the differences are between you're 790GX and my 790FX. But if i left things to auto - its a no go.

Wait, doesn't 533=1066mhz (533x2)

It does on my board at least...

actually, normally sbreeze you are quite right.

On this board, after a certain bios version, it shows the actual speed after the x2 multiplication. So if I set my ram to 533 in this bios, its actually 533 in windows.

Before a certain bios version, it was the way you mentioned.

I have all 4 slots now filled with memory. It failed boot a couple times until I upped the voltage one step and loosened the timings

I noticed the 4 gig kit has 5-6-6-18 timing and the 2 gig kit thats in there is 5-5-5-15

So, long story short, I will lower things until its unstable, go back one step and test until its stable. Patience and time at this point. Good to have 6 gigs running.

Windows assesment went from 5.5 on the ram to 7.4. only thing thats not above 7 is the hdd's.

CRAP.

bad idea to try to get a 4gig and a 2 gig kit of G Skill to run together.

No matter that I did - will not boot or be stable. Using the 4 gig kit now and had to run the 64 bit IE as the 32bit version isnt working very well anymore. Probably from all the friggin rebooting I did trying everything to get it back into windows.

ticked off and giving it up for tonight.

are you trying to run 2x2gb and 2x1gb at same time? unless they are matched ram they will not run smoothly together from my experience nor will 2gb chips and 1 gb chips work properly together.
