I got a legit copy of windows 7.. now here's whats happening.

Windows installer won't work on my roomates machine, nor does any of his audio jacks thanks to windows 7 having no support for drivers (even like 1yr old drivers it seems?? ASUS P5E-VM-HDMI!)

Now I can't log on any msn, aim, etc.. but he can on his machine.. same copy.. same build of Windows 7.. we both have totally different issues.. his even has a bunch of COM surrogate errors of stuff crashing, and then eventually the explorer gives out..

Its murphys law because I was using a cracked version of Windows 7 that worked fine, then I decided to buy a legit copy.. and nothing but issues.

Anyone else feeling my pain? I'll post up if i ever get msn to work.. but if it doesn't by mid tomorrow.. a format/install is going to happen real soon.

Try installing a "Different" version as well and see what happens.

I was getting COM Surogate errors, it was software that wasn't compatible with Win7. It had an icon in the Control Panel and everytime the CP was opened I'd get the error, I just renamed the .CPL file so it no longer came up in the CP.

So I reinstalled with a different version. I had to reinstall my motherboard LAN drivers a few times. But I still cannot log into MSN or AIM, but Skype works fine..! The hell??

Yeah the hell with it, I'm getting Trillian until I have the patience to resolve that.. I'm not quite sure whats doing it, windows updates wont work (on my legit copy either). MSN, AIM won't work. It's obviously probably something they all share in common, but yeah.. I tried a bunch of things using cmd prompts and reinstalling drivers. Nothing! But yes, yet my roomate has the exact same copy and he can update, use msn, etc. But he has that dumb windows installer issue....

are you using the windows 7 drivers for all the hardware? Or are you installing the latest drivers certified for windows 7 from the board manufacturer?

So this is what I've deduced.. someone tell me if it sounds probable..

I installed Windows 7 N I got, its the UK edition. I think this is why MSN or aim will not work properly.. something to do with regions. Even if i change all the settings to Canada I get all the same issues again. However.. I reinstalled with a different one, and it still is now UK.. i know infact it was NOT UK before.. But its still UK. My guess is I have to reset the cmos to clear anything relating to the UK.. I don't know why.. because I reformatte my machine, I thought that would clear it. But it doesn't seem to have done anything. My roomate had reinstalled on my old machine, which would of probably saved data in the cmos that it was indeed Canada region, so when he installed WIndows 7 N , it defaulted to Canada.

Does any of this sound probable or am I crazy? on my 3rd reinstall and I have no results with being able to use msn... I thought it sounded silly the cmos might do that..

I do remember reading somewhere before about different regions not working properly with MS products due to the price difference between UK/EU and North America when used outside their area (Europe costs more). There are two things you could try:

1) Unplug yer cable modem for a while and try to get a new IP address assigned to your computer
and/or...
2) reset the CMOS
then...
reformat/reinstall.
