Hey, I bought a La Cie External HD 500GB for about $110 @ futureshop on sale about 2-3months ago now... My friend dripped on the cord while it was on my chair, so i fell from my chair , to the floor, which is carpetted. Now when I start it up i get a weird kinda scratchy noises, and just another odd noise like a low beep... It starts, does that, then shuts itself off.. Any idea how to "fix" it ? It has a lot of valuable information on it, i just reformatted, so it was my backup i used to reformat with, has a bunch of paypal receits, as well as credit card information... |

I'd take it out of the external case and plug it in normally. The hard drive might have smashed up against the controller in the actual case itself and the fan migh be mucked up. Hard drives are designed to be able to absorb large quick shocks like that (200G+) so if it's the actual hard drive that's crapped out, you are very unlucky. |

if your hard drive was left on for a long while, and it was very hot, that fall may of killed it. I've seen that happen before and completely kill it, but as he said through it in your pc as a second drive, if you can get anything off it, move it while you can. other than that your data may be gone. |

i JUST managed to get a screwdriver to pop them out... It started up at the beginning but it just shut off.. just like it did with the external... if it is truely fried, should i just go buy a new HD and plug it into the previous exteranl, or go get a new one.. this one didnt have very good heat flow.. just a HD stuck inside an aluminum box lol |

Yeah it starts up, but once the bios screen goes away (it seems to stall for awhile, giving me options to do like a system recovery... ? ) and if i do go to any of them or if i wait, the second that screen goes away the HD itself turns off.... Sucks.. I guess ill have to go pickup another one, i hope it was just because it was hot when it was dropped.. i got it on sale from futureshop lol, lately anything i buy from them seems to die or mess up. |

Poopy-shizzle indeed. I plan from now on to keep on buying external drives to store my ever-growing collection on media. Packing 500 "movies" on a external drive is a very good use of physical space. I plan on staying away from shitty LaCie getups. I'll buy the drives and cases separately and spend the extra 20$. <3 |

yeah i got a SimpleDrive from bestbuy, its a lot lighter, and barely heats up..! and it was $130 on sale =) So hopefully this one holds up, but ill be a lot more careful, knowing how fragile they can really be... =) |
