If you wanted something today, I'd take sbeeze's advice and pick up a HD4770. Wait till the price drops on the 5870 then pick up a second HD4770 for even cheaper. Two of them in crossfire do very well.

A single 4770 would handle a 22" monitor. If you look you can get a 4890 for not that much more than a 4770 though.

Then again, October isn't that far off.

I agree with most of the comments about holding out for the price drop.

The way AMD and Nvidia structure their sales means they purposely produce a small amount of chips to avoid a large loss if the chip does not meet the expectations of the consumer. Therefore, the big price tag on their end, and the even higher retail markup.

If you have a 4850 or higher you should definately wait out. I really like my HD4870 just wish my mobo problems were fixed. 4890's are getting really cheap too you gotta look for the deals. More memory the better for the higher resolutions as well.

Some great performance is being had with the 2x4770 configurations as well. Definately consider that option as well.

4770 crossfire was attractive a couple months ago when 4890's were $300+, now you can get a single 4890 for about $50 more then a single 4770, so buying 2 at once doesn't make much sense atm.

I am going to be in the market for a 4890 soon. Time to move up a few notches and get away from xfire on two 3870's. Less pwr consumption as well.
