Apparently some R870 cards (eg 5870) were shipped from China to the Quakecon event happening this weekend in Dallas.

Hopefully there will nifty pics and videos come Sunday evening of the various new Id games like Rage, Wolfenstein and Doom 4!

drool, Ruby!

With the price on the MB site at 200$ or so for a 4870, I'm hoping for a 300$ pricepoint on a 5870, come October, woo!

On a related note if yer a Catalyst fiend like myself the new 9.8's are available here:
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Drivers/ATI_Catalyst/

AFAIK these are the same drivers that were used @ quakecon and will be on the AMD site on Monday.

SWEET! Apparently they finally figured out (decided) to allow peeps to use 3d clock speeds in 2d mode, which is good for me and WoW, since I play in a window, having dual monitors and whatnot. That's been a personal beef of mine for 3 years now.

Unfortunately I could not find the aformentioned "option" in the places that i was lead to believe it existed. No matter anyways as 3D speeds kick in whenever there is load put on the GPU.

As per tom's hardware they are 'predicting' the speed to be somewheres tween a 4870X2 and a 4890X2.

Imma wait to upgrade as the prices are going to really drop on the 4800 series cards.

Ndivia, AMD, ATI, Intel and Makers of any flash drive/mp3 player ALL do it - they incrementally release products due to marketing. You think they couldnt make a 16G flash drive when the 2 gig's came out? More than likely they were all produced, stored and released at the right time to maximize profit. same idea goes for all those companies. whata piss off :P

Video cards are a little more complicated than USB flash drives, especially when going to a smaller interconnect size (40nm this time).

I'm not even going to go into the shenanigans that the green team has been doing over the past few years.

Even a 50% performance increase over an individual 4870 would make the 5870 a decent price at 300-350$ (provided same power usage), depending on the CDN$. That, and I'll get rid of my 4870 (< 100$ though with prices being what they are now, bleh).

The real problem is that AMD hasn't really been spending that much time improving performance of any sort of crossfire. That segment is so small most people just spent double the money no matter what performance (if any, sometimes a negative!), just to say they now have 2. Apparently from what I'm reading they are now going to spend more time and effort on that market segment.

When all that is done, maybe I'll give windoze 7 a whirl heh. That, and DiRT 2 has been delayed to impliment DX11, which virtually guarantees I will make the plunge and stop using XP heh.

What ya gonna do with a 16GB flash drive anyways?

Perhaps going single card would be better unless ATI does improve the x-fire experience. I may want that 4870 Steve-o lol I am sure that one card runs better than two of my 3870's even OC'D.

the 16G flash drive was merely an example of incremental releases/marketing to maximize profit. Alot of companies do it, and we buy to upgrade.

From DiRT 2 game design manager Ralph Fulton:

“Without going into a graphical feature list, which I'm probably not best equipped to do at the moment, I can say that you will really see the superiority of DX11 in terms of the graphical fidelity it offers.

And that was a decision we took, to delay the PC version, to take advantage of DX11, purely because we weighed it up and said, look, what it allows us to do is make the best-looking racing game that has ever existed. Not just of the year or on PC, but has ever existed, because we were the first with an already cutting-edge game to take advantage of this technology, so it would definitely be worth putting it back.”

i'll just add a 2nd 4890 as the prices fall. nothing really taxes this card much anyway, and dx11 is just hype right now as was dx 10 and that turned out to be shat.

AM I the only one running XP 32 bit? lol Wasnt fond of vista really. Windows 7 is a definate possibility when its released. My 2nd machine just received an upgrade in the ram area so I will be triple booting that, xp 64, vista 64 and 7 64 bit all in good time. Just gotta find me a working install of xp 64. The ones I had turned out to have corrupt files on install.

Think I will be doing a couple 4870 or 4890's when prices drop. I WAS an Invidiot until a card or two made a loud pop. That was it for me.

I'm still on XP 32, but I'm triple boot.

been 64bit since Vista launched. with the way today's cards are going you will have no choice. XP 64bit is solid now if you don't wanna run vista/7.

well this would be going on my 2nd machine that I use for doing repairs. I picked up 2 x 2G of Patriot 800Mhz for it for nothing so thought I would do 64 bit. Its also got a 2 gig kit of super talent in it as well for now - until I get my brothers machine built for a xmas gift, it will run 6 gigs - 4 later when I need the 2 gig kit for another build. With 4 gigs - I wanna run xp 64 and maybe dual or triple boot it - including vista and 7 64 bit.

I am thinking the xp 64 failed reading some files from the dvd I made as I burnt it at max speed. I will retry again at a much slower speed and see how that goes.

4x or less on -r worked for me.

I'll probably stick to my OC'd 4890. It's running what I want just fine, no need to upgrade any time in the near future.
Although, that Ruby figure looks sexy.
