Have y'all tested it with any ATi 5000 series card? I don't see it on http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx but that list doesn't mean much.

I don't imagine that would work with 3 displays.

I've seen other posts with people saying that it does infact work, but it's a tossup. I've also seen posts that say the active adaptor doesn't work perfect either. I'd much rather spend the extra dosh on a product that has more chance of working, but if a 20$ solution works, I'll go that way.

And I go to the WGF forums regularily, so I've seen all the qq's from all parties involved.

That will work, with 2 displays, not 3.

The DP to VGA adapters are supposed work fine

Quote:
VGA, DVI, and HDMI connections all require a timing signal generated external to the video signal. A monitor needs this timing signal to function properly.

The ATI 5870 only has two timing signal generators, even though is has four outputs: 2xDVI, 1xHDMI, and 1xDP (DisplayPort). Thus, in order to use three monitors with this GPU, one needs to utilize the DP connection.

There are actually two types of DP connections: DP and DP+. DP+ connections are capable of passing through signals for other connection types (such as DVI and VGA). DP-only connections cannot do this. If one were to connect an inexpensive passive DP-to-DVI adapter to a DP+ port and a DVI monitor, it would work properly. But if one tries the same thing with a DP-only port, it will not work. This is a why an "active" adapter is needed; it actively transcodes a DP signal into DVI (or some other connection standard). These adapters must be powered; most (all?) use a simple USB connection.

I know about the quote there, I'm was confused about:
"That will work, with 2 displays, not 3."
I've seen posts that show people with passive adapters sometimes working with resolutions of 1920x1200, and that active adapters are required for those with 30" 2560x1600 resolutions, like the rich tards at [H].

MB doesn't yet have a supplier yet (but they are trying...right?) of the active adapters, so i'm limited in my ability to get things locally.

I suppose for $13 it wouldn't hurt to try, everything will be display port eventually, we've got a Quadro card at work that uses it, maybe I should 'borrow' the adapter along with another 24" monitor for the weekend and see if it works. That or lug my PC into work, that way I could have 3 identical monitors.
