Intel will soon no longer produce their own motherboards. At first glance this doesn't seem like a huge deal, since most of us use third party branded boards anyway, but of those how many use Intel-based chipsets? Now from what I've seen Intel will continue producing chipsets but they'll mainly be used for test beds for testing their CPU's, which means they'll probably have very little innovation going on. So if companies like nVidia and VIA don't pick up this slack the custom desktop market could really be in for a world of hurt in a few years. :?

Thoughts?

I think details are too sketchy at this conjecture to properly condone Intel for silly things. But as an AMD fanboi, I applaud any silly thing Intel does.

I doubt Intel is going to bring their brand down by relying on the like of Nvidia, AMD and VIA for chipsets. They may choose not to have Foxconn make motherboards for them anymore, but they'll no doubt work closely with other big players and keep making quality chipsets to go with their cpus.

I thought I also heard that after this upcoming release of new Intel CPU's the next line-ups that were planned only included chips that were soldered directly to the boards. I know this is kind of early to be speculating but it sounds to me like Intel wants people using "ultrabooks" for their computers from now on and none of this DIY non-sense.

I think that was just a stupid unfounded rumour that was going around.
