"The problem is, and I hate to ruin the surprise here, Phenom isn't faster than Intel's Core 2 Quad clock for clock. In other words, a 2.3GHz Phenom 9600 will set you back at least $283 and it's slower than a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Quad Q6600, which will only cost you $269."

... It's got a cool name though huh? ;)

I find AMD/ATI has been good in the past for matching a price to their current line-up's performance but it's not looking that way just yet for the Phenom. Hopefully when production matures a bit they'll start aligning themselves better though.

i was gonna buy one on release day. but after seeing the performance numbers i may just wait to see what happens price wise.

 Perhaps laying off huge numbers of their R&D staff wasn't such a bright idea.

This is a bigger issue then the Phenom's being slower clock for clock than the Core 2 Quads in my opinion. Even though they say the bug only occurs in rare situations I'm sure venders and consumers will be much more weary of this line and possibly AMD as a whole.

The B3's have arrived, and well, they still get stomped by a year and a half old Intel Quad.

Yeah it's a pity they didn't manage to release this one first....

From an overclocker's perspective the 3G top clock wouldn't have looked too bad (if it was priced right), but now that the G0 Q6600s are clocking well it mostly falls flat on its face.

DAMMIT is still alive and kicking, and good for them. Hopefully the Abu Dhabi cash infusion will kickstart their R&D back into gear. AMD keeps Intel in check price-wise and the upcoming Phenom price cuts helps all consumers, unless you buy EE processors, but then you deserve an empty wallet.

Myself, I buy AMD just on principle. Intel is the better performer but I gave up overclocking a long time ago, and I don't like space heaters in the summer months.

AMD could use a kick, I don't want to go back to paying Intel's pre A64 exorbitant pricing. (Xtreme Ed. cpu's aside)

ahmen to that! but by the sounds of it given all the recent lay-offs and constant hemmoraging of cash i'd say amd's days are numbere. i just hope ati will ecape there fate.
on an interesting note in the cpu world, looks like nvidia is going to attempt to buy via to get an x86 license. i wonder what this could be bringing on....

I heard about that as well. I think they should get their x86 licence the grey area way like AMD did. They hired a group to reverse engineer an Intel CPU and then fired the entire staff and hired a new group to build an x86 processor using the research and notes of the first group in order to bypass the illegality of what they were really doing... or at least that's what I heard they did.
