I didn't have a spare 2.5" HD, nor USB dock, for that sized drive around. ;)

Even if I did I think the PS3's OS needs that data "backed up" with their in-OS utility to work since it's probably more of an export/import utility than a backup and compression one.

Sony's official line...It's about what I expected.

"Some services may be provided automatically without notice when you are online" which basically means that Sony can do whatever the hell it wants to do to the content of your PS3 without notifying you or asking your permission.

Yeah...right!

Nice.

So you pay money only to be told what to do and have things done to your (well in this case apparently) semi-private property.

Glad I dont do consoles.

This doesn't surprise me and it isn't just consoles that are changing like this. Lots of things are going away from ownership towards a service just so these companies can keep a stranglehold over their customers.

PC Gaming has their share of it to - Any MMO will require forced updates, COD MW2 had some pretty dumb restrictions a lot of people hated but had to put up with, you can't sell used games bought on Steam (which I think is huge), any game that includes a DRM and the list goes on.

Whenever companies try to justify why these restrictions are needed I always think of how right they are. I mean no industry (books) could survive and pay their creators (authors, editors, press) if there were places that sold second hand products (used books stores) legally let alone if there was a place where their intellectual property was given out for free (libraries) amirite?
