I get the impression that when it refers to 'desktop computers' they mean a complete computer, everything after the "includes..." just defines what they consider to be a complete computer.

If my guess is right, that would mean that individual components should be exempt (except for monitor and printers).

Well, if that's what it is then I suppose I could live with it..... :)

It would seem that Alberta does have to pay the same taxes on their electronics as we do:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/ ... g-tvs.html

On top of which, for the purposes of clarification for anyone who cares, here's some specifics (PDF):
http://www.acestewardship.ca/pdf/ACES_B ... r_2007.pdf

Seems pretty cut-and dried...by people who don't know what they're talking about.
It sucks to have to pay $45 tax for your 45" TV, but you're only paying the same $45 if you buy one of those kick ass new 150" TV's too...so...buy the biggest TV you can I guess.

I work part time retail on the weekends and the "FEE"(Tax Grab) is only applied on complete systems, printers, and monitors. There is no "FEE" on individual items. It should also be clearly stated on the receipt how much the fee was and what it is for. It is not supposed to be incorporated in the price.

Its not just a tax grab in an of itself, the HST is also applied on top of it.
Tax on tax.
It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

As long as it is not applied to all parts then I don't see a big problem with it. $22 extra for a complete system is not really a lot of money, the only point I would make is that why do the nerds have to pay?

We are not the only ones using throw away materials, however, I will keep quiet lest the government hears me and starts taxing everything for the "environment".

I would also like to see where this money goes and I would feel a lot better about it.
