Now that the Core i7 has been released and is somewhat available I was wondering if anyone has invested in this new platform.

I know that Clarke and Skiman were both talking about getting these new CPU's. If they have I was just wondering what their thoughts were on performance, etc...as I am looking to get one of these bad boys in the near future.

i will be in the new year when the market settles a bit, right now prices have been driven way to high by demand.
intel will be rolling out a new lineup for the mainstream in February which should overclock very nicely for those who don't wanna spend 350-800 on a cpu, plus there should be some more price friendly chipsets out there.

lol yeah it is pretty steep but the cheaper boards are only abit over $300 though. & the i920 is just hovering above $400 right now.

I had just called and had a CPU and Mobo put on hold for me...but I believe that it was an impulse thing. I'm thinking that it will be better to wait until the new year when prices go down like you said.

good idea, best to wait and see what the mainstream chips offer. alot of the time if you overclock you can get just as much from them, the only thing the concerns me is if they axe HT from some of the cheaper models but i have been told atleast some of the mainstream chips will have it.

there will likely be a few additional chipsets P55,P53,P51,G51 much like previous models chipset names may change as well this is just an example. what i am wondering is if they will axe SLI from everything below x58 to keep enthusiasts paying top dollar.

It's funny as this is the first i've heard of what your saying Sbeeze & I've been all over the boards from here to hell & back practically lol. I'm not saying your wrong but it's the the first i've heard of it. If someone is in the position & wants to get one now instead of wait who cares. I personally have never had top of the line just coming out hardware till now & I don't regret it one bit. Who cares if they are going to be $50 cheaper retail a month from now lol. I didn't have to wait that month like I usually would being as i'm now an "eccentric" bahahahaha. Love that word it was hilarious when I read it! lmao.

there are more chipsets coming in 2009, unless the roadmaps are all bs and intel suddenly decides to ignore the mainstream which is the meat and potatoes of the entire industry, take my word for it or don't, i couldn't give a sh*t either way.

and tony nobody is specifically talking to you, or calling you anything but most people that are buying the limited chips and boards right now are ecentric when it comes to these things and there driving the price up. if you think now is a good time to buy then all the power to you enjoy, i am waiting to see what happens after the intial demand is dried up because if i save 100-200 bucks then its well worth the wait.

I didn't say anybody called me anything I put myself in that catagory & laughed at what you said cause I thought it was funny lol. Don't take things so personal dude lolol. I've been sitting here with this crap E3110 for far to long wishing I had gone quad right off the get go no I am with just about the best gear you can get for the money save getting the X of course. Little to much money for my liking but it is a sweet a$$ chip. If I sat around & waited for things all my life instead of going for them I'd be well.... Lets leave it at that then shall we lol.

I lucked into what I have & put some out as well but you can't get the things you want without sacrifice. I'll see you when i'm upgrading again in a couple more months when your just getting to enjoy them. Not meaning to sound arrogant but that's what I've always done & I'm tired of it.

i am not taking it personal, and i didn't meant to sound defensive. you and everyone on the forum know how i feel about i7, and if i didn't know what i do from people that are in the industry(take it as it is, i garuntee nothing) i would prob be more up to the idea of buying one at current prices. and i know your not an eccentric tony, but the group that is typically paying these prices are. trust me i was in that group before i became a father lol.

the things i do know, is there will be mainstream chips and boards. i have heard a few things like chipset names and stuff but take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah right on. I figured it would be a matter of time before something was brought out for the entry level enthusiast type so to speak as why would they want to spend that much money on something they really know nothing about lol. Plus a wider variety market stems for higher profits lol.

the way to look at it is when the mainstream chips hit in February whos gonna put a $200 chip in a $500 motherboard lol
so i suspect a mainstream board at the same time.

post some benches when you get her all setup tony.

Oh for sure. It wont be totally setup for some time yet unless I decide to grab a half decent used cooler on it for the time being. my plan is to go water on it eventually with a moderate setup. Nothing to over board but it will do the job well.

apparently the mainstream i7 chips won't even be on the 1366 socket, it will be on socket 1160(1156 pins actually). i will be interested on what this will mean feature wise. the last time i remember a vendor offering two sockets to the desktop market like that was when the athlon 64 launched and they had socket 940 (fx series) and 939.

the mainstream i7 core will be lynnfield. and the only change i have heard is it will be dual channel ddr3 not tri channel like bloomfield/1366
