I have had windows 7 x64 installed now for about 2 weeks and it has been working great, but recently it has been acting up. The explorer often hangs when clicking on a new drive and sometimes when i open the explorer it takes forever to show the drives. This problem is not limited to the explorer. i have noticed hangs when opening firefox or even the task manager. The weird thing is the task manager does not show any abnormal cpu or ram usage. This seems to be a common problem according to what I found when i googled the issue. Any Ideas?

Disable pre-fetch and indexing.

Really, is that what was doing it? I have had major issues with hanging over the past couple of week sas well, thought it was just a (lack of) power issue.

Rebooting and seeing if it happens still, basically I can reproduce it 100% of the time, playing wow and running a full screen youtube video on the other screen would BSOD.

Update: Neat, no crashes, I owe you a beer (or two) Phonix! Although MB doesn't like that since I don't need to buy a new PSU now :)

Are there any performance loses by disabling pre-fetch and indexing? It just seems weird that Microsoft would enable them by default when people get much better performance/have less problems with them disabled.

In my case, not crashing 10 times a day is faster than any kind of unoptimizations gained from turning it off :P

Hi and thanx for the responses. I tried what you suggested but it did not help. It still lags upon startup. it made no difference in opening the explorer. Still hangs and lags. Firefox and even the start bar all seem to lag or become unresponsive. Have done a virus scan and spyware scan with 0 errors.

You may have a memory leak then, that's not apparent in your task manager.

Obtain a copy of memtest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic cd to see if there is a problem with your ram. Also make sure all clocks are set to stock for your cpu, gpu and ram.

Are you getting a blue screen? Error code?

Check for overheating, damaged hard disks or poorly connected devices.

Last but not least, make a small partition and install a new copy of windows on it. Boot to it and see if there's still a problem. If not, it might have just been an installation issue.

Superfetch being disabled doesn't have a huge impact on your system. At least not on mine.

Indexing has always been unnecessary, it just makes file operations a little quicker, but it's not THAT much quicker, and puts unnecessary loads on your system while you game or do other hardware intensive operations.

Others have assigned affinity to the indexing service on a particular core on their cpu with good results. Personally, I just turn it and UAC off as soon as I fresh install Vista/7.

Mine still kept on crashing, I had to basically reinstall windows from scratch. I'm avoiding any and all updates from windows that isn't for devices on my system. I'll have a go at it and see if it crashes at all tonite.

I've read that HDMI audio causes a screw up, I will be disabling that tonite as well. Apparently it's a problem with windows update (from ATi), so maybe, just maybe I won't be getting crashes.

I checked the ram with memtest and it ran for 6 hours without a single error. Checked the drives with chkdsk as well with 0 problems. I am not sure if this is important but my main drive is a raid 0 array with 3 raptors. the raid software says the array is healthy though. I didnt think that was the issue cause a lot of people are having the same issues and the are not using raid. This seems to be an issue with windows 7 but I am not certain.

I can't run a youtube video without windows crashing. 9.12's better fix this or I'm going to buy NVidia, whenever they release a card.

crappy! I just looked at my 2nd pc and the raid up and died. 3 x36G rappy's in raid 0 and all drives are showing that they have pooped.

oh well. I am sure the drives are fine but onboard raid sucks. I will have to redo the setup and reinstall 7 again :( this time I will make a backup image

the catalyst 9.11's have been a little disappointing. i had to go hunting down a copy of the 9.10's so i could play borderlands again.

also, are we all having to reinstall windows 7 this week or what? mine, for whatever reason, lost its partition table and i couldn't recover it. had to format the drive and start from scratch.

ok this sounds weird but I had uninstalled my setpoint software for my G7 mouse and all seems good now. 0 Problems since getting rid of that software. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I think it all has to do with Adobe Flash 10, and running Windows 7 64bit. Of course that kind of kills the youtube experience, but I can live without that until they release a stable 64 bit version of flash and internet exploder.

I haven't had any issues with Win7 Pro x64, yet, this machine has an Nvidia card though. Steam seems to suck up a LOT of resources though.

One release of setpoint I had would randomly BSOD my PC if I used the mouse wheel
