I got my i5 750 a few days ago and slapped everything together. Still waiting on a video card as they told me yesterday it was discontinued, before it was just back-ordered. Originally was the 4890 but now I'm getting a 5770, same price, just a new series as far as I can see for now. But here's my current setup

i5 750
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4
4GB DDR3 1600 G.Skill Ram
x1 500GB WD HD
BFG 9800GTX
850W Modular Silverstrider PSU (this thing has more cables than I know what to do with, it looks like you could try to pull on 3 sli/crossfire, along with 10 HD's and more.. I used about a 1/5 of the cables for this!)

stock cooling on everything, but I got an armor series case. The i5 750 stock cooler is the smallest intel stock cooler I've ever seen. It's like they took a regular one and sawed it in half so the heatsink is half the size.. That being said my idle temperatures are 50c, I took off the stock thermal paste and put on some Arctic Silver 5, worries me maybe I applied too much or too little to be receiving 50c stock temps.

Stock coolers and me don't get along lol

I always fire those things in a drawer somewheres and go aftermarket - something with heat pipes and a large fan.

I would suggest a ZALMAN CNPS10X or a Thermaltake V8. After that - O.C away.

Yeah I had some aftermarkets in mind.. its idling at 50c right now.. If i take the side off and push on the heatsink it will drop to as low at 35c.. and the heatsink doesn't feel loose at all, its nice and tight on there. But I'm going to A) Try a remount, and repaste

B) Salvage a 775 Zalman cooler I used before and see if it fits.. I doubt it'll work but it may be better than stock until I can afford after market.

well question answered.

if you push on it and it drops 20 degrees, you have your issue right there.

It doesn't seem to contact well even when its secured down, only when i push on it...

That being said I took a ZF700 and flipped my case on its side. Didn't both doing the elaborate mounting. I simply took off the intel stock, and placed the ZF700 heatsink down on the chip with just the paste the chip had on it.. it runs at 30c flat on idle.. and now when I put the intel stock back on it ramps up to atleast 60c.. such a POS.

I'm thinking of just leaving my case on the side until tuesday when I get paid for a aftermarket cooler..

EDIT: My bad! Supposedly it's now idling at 38-39c with the intel stock back on it.. the ZF was kind of noisy and i said the hell with OCing until i find a proper aftermarket cooler.. I guess the real problem was too much paste. I left what was on the chip, cleaned the heatsink.. and it seemed to work great.

Be doing ocing next week =\ if I can pickup something nice to cool it. I also get my 5770 i think too.

Yeah - too much paste will usually always create insulation. It happens sometimes when its thought that alot of paste means being sure of the heat transferring.

This isnt the case. Keep in mind that a very tiny amount ( about a 1/2 grain of rice ) is enough - because when you push the heatsink down, it spreads it pretty much the whole size of the chip about 1-2mm thick. That very tiny amount is whats needed to only fill the imperfections on both the cpu and heatsink surface to make it flat.

Glad you worked it out. I would still do aftermarket for a better overclock with lower temps.

Yeah well payday is just a few days away.. I was either going to go with...

Corsair Cooling Hydro Water Series H50 High Performance CPU Cooler $99

OR

ZALMAN CNPS10X EXTREME(1156/1366/775/AM3/AM2+) $84

None of the coolmasters seem to have support for 1156.

So its fans vs liquid cooling..

any thoughts? I look up some reviews on the H50 and they say its pretty decent, keeps it as cool as the highend air, plus its fairly quiet.

I would bow out to those who have used similar setups for advisement. However, alot of these self contained water coolers have some very nice reviews.

Like anything one buys, do a lil homework to be sure you get the right one for you with the performance you want for the money you spend.

I would like to add that you can add another 120mm fan to the rad for a push pull effect on the H50 - a tri speed fan is suggested unless you have a fan controller.

After doing some reading, I am also interested in one of those. I am going to see how one compares to the V8 for cooling.

Maybe worth it for you but not for me as I use the V8 already.

Damn.. any idea if the V8 has a 1156 compatibility ? I thought I skimmed over that before.. but wasn't sure... when I was looking around ncix's cooling solutions

Also looking for some new case fans cause mine are old, and getting noisy.. this sounds amazing to me aside from a 120mm costing $30... but..

Cooler Master R4 megaflow 200 110 CFM

110 CFM at 700rpm ?? Isnt that... really really good? most have much higher RPM, and much noisier... and they move like 50CFM at best..

if it moves that much air at that barely audible rpm that would be impressive. A stomach gurgle would make more noise. I have one of those on my Antec 900 v2 but a tri-speed.

Online check of that cooler direct from coolermaster: http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=5279

Intel Socket:
LGA1366 / LGA1156 / LGA775 *

looks like u are good to go for that one.

The V8 is a great Air solution. The best I have tried to date. You will be impressed. take temps ide and load now with stock and again with the V8 idle and load and post the results

Yeah I will, I was very bored so I took my machine apart and cleaned every fan, and all of the dust. System temperature was at 40c, now its at 25c. Now I also did a few different things, and it not any noisier than it was before surprisingly.. I have the Armor series fulltower case so its quite large. I moved the harddrive bay to the top just under my DVD/CD, it has a 120mm fan on the front that sucks air out of the case. Then I put 2 120mm fans below that. So I have 3 120mm fans exhausting out the front. I have a 120mm fan on the back pulling air in, a 250mm fan on the side pulling air in (its a monster, and hard to clean). A 120mm fan from my PSU exhausting out the back, another 80mm fan doing the same right beside it (case it big enough to have 2 PSU side by side but other slot can act as a fan bracket) Then I taped a 80mm fan to the top of my case where it has a bunch of holes for vent. Hot air rises I'm just sucking it up and spitting it out faster. So yeah 40c to 25c.. I was pretty pleased with that. I also got to kill a bunch of blue lights, I've grown to hate any blue lights now from years of fans that only come with blue lights. I also tie wrapped, duct taped, and got creative on how to keep all of my wires out of the way for maximum airflow.

So from 40c to 25 system temperature.
The stock intel cooler also went from 49c to 34c idle!

I pushed the i5 750 to 4.0ghz but during tests it got as hot as 75c. Although I read that the heat threshold is 110c before the system auto shuts down, and even then its a safe temperature.. I guess the i5, i3, and i7 all have their heat sensors placed closer/differently than the core2duo and the quads we've been used to. Basically a 10-12c difference because its placed in a different spot. So I guess 75c isn't that outrageous, when you think oh.. its probably 63c using the old thermal placement.

I dont think its that stable at 4.0ghz, but I think I may have to move on to other benchs than just 3dmark06. I got my score from 1400 too around 1600 nearly jumping from 2.66ghz to 4.0ghz. To me that screams something must be unstable becaues I was sure that would be a much larger margin to gain. Maybe tweaking my voltages would help, its at 1.35 right now which I've read many people have acheive 4.0ghz on. But I'll wait until I get my hands on that V8, if the POS intel stock is now at a low 34c I can't imagine how that'll do when on load.

I even considered moving my bedroom around to have the PC next to the window.. .and experiment with having a tube so the cold air is funneled in.. but I suppose moisture.. and the fact that screams NEEEEEERD.

hopefully I'll have some nice results tomorrow after work
