For those of you running Windows 7 , I was wondering what you're thoughts were on this new OS. Likes, dislikes, issues and neat tricks you have learned. Seeing as some of you have been running this for months. I have just moved to it on my main Gaming rig and so far its quite smooth. I haven't dug myself into it yet. But overall I am pleased with the performance. I am only now starting to configure it how I would like. One thing I did notice before I got the chance to prejudice-ly turn off Sleep, is that it actually works and is fast. I am interested in hearing some feedback. Discuss! |

well with every OS release, there's bound to be software issues. Not exactly 100% the fault of MS. Other people just have to get with the times and offer updates or later compatible versions. That point can easily be argued in another direction tho so it isnt a full 100 percent of my personal view. Network issues are not surprising, But something that you wouldn't expect when Windows is talking to Windows, unless there's settings that need to be tweaked. Either way - pain in the behind. Anyone else have any views, issues tips and tricks for 7? I would very much like to hear about them and the experiences you have had - both positive and downright sh*tty. Thus far in the past few days of gaming, interweb browsing, things are good. Suggestions for 64 bit 7 compatable AV? Don't mean to get ahead of myself but there is talk of Windows 8 slated for 2012 - apparently a true 128-bit OS. |

Windows 7 has been the smothest transition for me out of any non server os i have ever used. Windows XP was the worst POS when it was released. |

I boycotted Windows XP for a good 2 years after it was released. Windows 98 SE was pretty damn good for its time. XP to Vista was a big jump but once I got Vista 64bit SP2 "beta" and tweaked it out, I actually liked Vista a lot more than XP. Even despite the few glitches and negative feedback. Been running Windows 7 for awhile now. Besides the new taskbar, there wasn't much of a learning curve coming from Vista. It runs well on all 3 of my PC's, no compatibility issues and the speed of "sleep" mode is awesome. That's the one thing that I really liked about OS X Leopard and now Windows is on par with it. |

Agreed Tweakstur. Sleep mode was set up with default settings by default upon install that I didnt touch yet - so I stumbled upon it when I got up the next morning and thought the machine turned off with some sort of error perhaps. I hit the space bar and it was up to desktop in 2-3 seconds flat good to go. I'm impressed. Sleep finally works and well. I initially didn't like the look of the "quick launch" area. Changed that to small icons and its good 'cosmetically' for me. Lots of digging and tweaking to go yet as time goes on. Then I will do an image and fire it to a different hdd. Nice to have it built in ! |

i agree with sbeeze. this has been the smoothest OS transition i've done yet. i haven't hit any incompatibility with software i actually use. I was able to add in the old quick launch bar and small icons for the taskbar so it's back to something usable. it's a lot snappier than vista was. I think my only complaint is how the taskbar groups together different windows from the same program no matter what the settings are. I'm constantly losing track of where things are (i'm easy to confuse sometimes). |

Windows 7 Ult x64 is now my main and only OS on my home PC. I am VERY impressed. I have not (seriously) ran into one single software or hardware conflict. Even 32 bit apps that would not work on XP64 or Vista64 now work flawlessly in 7. My favorite feature is the new and improved Aero desktop manager. I have never been so organized and have all my programs at my fingertips, sorted and categorized. Performance is ON PAR with XP, not saying it surpasses XP, but it is certainly a huge improvement over Vista. ReadyBoost now works AS IT SHOULD Installing fonts is now super easy (just right click and install) Only issue I have is my adobe apps (Photoshop, Dreamweaver) take up to 5 mins to launch on the x64 version. Now onto a professional deployment: I convinced my boss to purchase 4 licenses of Windows 7 Pro, to set up a testing environment for future deployment. All can join the test domain, group policy works 100% as it should. And mapping drives is easier with a neat way of organizing network shares. Dr B, the 2 laptops I'm using are a Vostro and Latitude, I have put a shortcut to my common drive on each. There they remain. Very interesting with Cygwin, I haven't installed it yet, I'll look for an updated installer. I set up a test box running 7 Pro x64 and configured it as a print server. The reason I wanted to do this was that we have experienced numerous problems in the past when sharing or hosting a printer on a Vista 64 and sometimes XP 64 machine. Even after adding both 32 and 64 bit drivers, many of our printers would print in RAW format instead of rendered text. I put a Xerox Workcentre, T9220, and a couple other Xerox/Brother printers on the print server. Not only do all computers print properly now, but the spooler seems to have a higher priority and therefore processes documents much faster than Vista or XP. Added SSD's to 2 laptops running Windows 7, now we're getting 15-20 second boot times, and Win 7 really takes advantage of this and at least creates the 'feel' of a high performance machine. As far as pushing Win7 as a full featured server (IIS, SQL, etc), we have NO INTENTIONS of using it as a server OS. S2008 is still the standard until 2010 is released. As for workstations, at the end of January we are going to start switching some of the IT staff's PC's to a 1.Win7/2.WinXP environment. I do however, add the odd icon to the taskbar and after a couple days, it loses its icon and reverts to the default icon. Not sure why this is. VERY IMPRESSED |

Monkeydee there is a very small software download that can in the most simplistic fashion, ungroup grouped items on the taskbar and tweak few little things using a very small group of check boxes. http://rammichael.com/?proj=29

I've been running Win7 Ultimate x64 since 2 weeks prior to the Win7 Launch date. At first the task bar annoyed me at first but I stuck with it and now I find it quite handy with the jump lists. Networking with the homegroups has never been so easy. Just enter the password of the homegroup on my 2 laptops and bam instantly networked and printer shared with my main desktop. And I have yet to feel the urge to format with the way XP & Vista used to seem to get sluggish after a few months of use. Win7 is just as snappy as ever! Not to mention the libraries are a decent feature as well. |
