Post subject:  Someone please talk me out of Aliant TV/Internet

I was all set to order Easlink HD TV tonight and I was looking through their site at what it would cost me etc when I noticed that Discovery, a channel I currently get in SD, isn't automatically "upgraded" even though DiscoveryHD exists. So it seems like one of the few channels I'm actually interested in having in HD is something I would have to pay for yet again. Sure, they'll cram 5+ sports channels in HD down my throat and make me pay for them but for some random reason this is the only channel that you don't automatically get in HD.

I called anyways expecting that when confronted about this fact the rep would quickly offer it to me as a single channel upgrade for free and I would sign up and be happy. 30+ minutes on the phone later and they couldn't do it. I was shocked that a $2.99/month upgrade wasn't possible. I mean, I know it's only $2.99 but when your bill is already this high the thought of paying $3 more makes me want to puke in a cup of feces and then fly to South America to find those 2 girls. Plus it's about the principle.

So in conclusion I went to Bell's site afterwards and looked at how much their HD bundle (phone and internet) would be and it's looks like a small chunk cheaper plus I would get a better choice over what shows I was getting. I know their internet is bad and I'm sure their digital TV interface isn't as nice but it's looking pretty tempting right about now for the first time in years and I need someone with more experience with them to tell me what a bad idea this would be...

Also, I'm well aware that I could call Eastlink and threaten to switch/cancel and they would probably get me a deal pretty quickly in that case but I'm not that type of person. If I called to cancel then it would be in fact because I wanted to cancel.

wow.

I am floored. Dude it just had to be a rep that didnt know what he/she was doing.

They can discount anything they need/want to , to an extent or find a way around it.

My bill shows discounts for all kinds of things. Not because I called to b*tch, but because like you, we were being gouged. So I saw a deal from Aliant that looked good , still wanted eastlink, but wanted that price.

you know something? I got it and for 12 months. I wasn't an a$$ on the phone either. I explained myself. They didnt know I didnt want Aliant. I would rather pretend to want Alaint for a 5 min phone call and in total save ~600+ dollars this year ( thats about 50 bucks per bill ), than be peeved every month @ a bill that I know is mildly retarded.

I aint rich, so 50 bucks a month is noticable to a small extent. Think of it as a payment to an rrsp.

well my parents had aliant up till about 2 years ago. it wasnt all that horrible. i had a decent connection, although no wheres near the speed i get with eastlink.

sometimes you have to be firm and persistant and basically waste a few hours one day and then you'll finally get what you want. (customer service reps cannot hang up on you until you say you are finished with your call) eastlink is great if you can beat them down in their price a bit

I'm hoping it was just the rep not knowing what he was and wasn't able to do but he put me on hold several times to talk to people there and each time he came back with a response that wasn't "Ok we can do that" so I would think he would be talking to someone who would know this stuff. The most I got out of it was he "said" he could e-mail the sales and marketing team there and put in a complaint for me that channels you already get in SD you should automatically get in HD when you upgrade but I'm sure nothing will come of that.

Anyways, thanks to Denty and Dr. B for letting me know once again that it's not worth switching to Aliant for... I hate not having an alternative to switch to when I'm mad but I guess it could be worse. I'll let people know if I hear back from them or if I talk to any more reps.

also aliant internet sucks nuts lol. Why not just download ANY tv show you watch? All you have to pay is internet bill lol

I use to have utorrent setup with rss feeds from certain sites i go on and it auto downloads any new show that i have in my "to download" list. You can get pretty much any show under the sun

Geeze I don't see how aliant is that bad .. I have it and get 7mb speeds and very very little down time. In the last 3 years maybe 3-4 days and that was a bad line that chaffed on a tree in high winds. My gf has EL and gets 9-10mb but it's down on the average of 3 days per month ... last month 8 days total down time. And it's not just hers it's a lot of people in the area. Lots of people here are switching from EL to Aliant not because of speeds but because of EL not giving a shit about it's customers and fixing it's shit around here.

My connection is awesome ( full 15 mb/s ) and in 3 yrs it went down once for a few hours - in which case they offered a small credit to the acct to offset the outage when I called to ask what was going on.

No complaints.
