I'm at a cross between an ASUS and a Gigabyte board for my new i5 750 system. I've used 4 ASUS boards in the past and had nothing but good things really so I automaticlaly lean towards ASUS until I saw a review on a Gigabyte board.

GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX I

vs

ASUS P7P55D LE LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

Both are within $5 of one another. Howver they both have 8 S-ATA ports, but the Gigabyte has 2 S-ATA that run at 6gb/s and they also have 2 USB ports that operate much faster (USB 3.0) Which would be a benefit because I backup on a big external normally. I'm not familiar with them, but has anyone heard good things? I mean do they overclock well? Of course I've looked up a bunch of stuff on my own but anyone with personal experience goes a long way than an random article on the internet. I figure the faster sata ports and usb ports might be a bonus, but if it cant handle heat, or craps out quickly who cares how fast their running when its dead right?

USB 3.0 looks great on paper but its gonna be awhile before devices really take advantage of it(and become affordable) and 6gbps SATA ports won't be much use yet as most drives now can't even come close to saturating the current standard SATAII bus. But either way you will get a solid board and for $5 bucks those features are prob well worth it especially if you plan on keeping this board for a few years.

From my experience the asus is a little bit better overclocker, and i also prefer asus over gigabyte quality wise.

I actually read a post on the downfall of Gigabytes usb 3.0 and the 6gb/s S-ATA. Apparently if you turn those on your PCI-E downs to x8 instead of x16... I don't plan on keeping stuff for much longer than a year.. year and a half really. I'm leaning back towards the ASUS one again, but part of me just wants to try Gigabyte to try other brands, i mean it great other than those features won't be of use to me unless I actively want to down my video to x8 hah.

Wish I could find the link but its something like " Gigabytes usb 3.0 pitfalls " It's explained in diagrams and photos! woo!

ASUS boards have treated me good over the years. It's all I use.

Of course now is the moment where Skiman comes in and lists all the problems with ASUS boards that I never encountered.

Actually he runs a R2E now and has had great results. Any motherboard can have problems.


Personally I just don't buy Gigabyte boards. Don't like them, don't like their color, don't like how they overclock as I had the shittiest results with them.

Problems with Asus boards, never

P4T - 30% system resources used running Win2K + SB128 - Asus blamed Creative, Creative blamed Asus.
K8V-X - Don't get me started on this Via based attrocity, luckily S754 was very short lived
P5N-SLI - NF570 my ass, rebranded NF4 that wouldn't OC for crap
P5B Deluxe - x1 bug, enough said
P5Q Deluxe - newer BIOS's added a 'feature' for the newer CPU's that my older CPU doesn't support, this new feature could not be disabled and caused BSOD hell
M2A-VM HDMI - Would not function with OCZ memory worth a damn (It was even on the QVL), had to get Crucial instead
A8N-SLI - POS fan died in a couple of months

Chances are my next board will be an Asus though :roll: I think the only board I haven't had an issue with is my Intel D945GCLF.

I have had good results and stability with all the asus boards I have had. All have been AMD based systems tho running ATI cards/chipsets. Nothing Intel / Nvidia.

The current board I have can be a little tedious at times with all the options when setting up but functions fine.

Sights set on another asus board (moving to AM3) some time early in the new year.

i stuck with asus for the last 3 years. haven't done me wrong. besides them just dying on me after 8 months because of the water gear i jack all over it. other then that rock solid boards. asus is pretty dependable. and 80% of the time great for over clocking. just watch your bios updates because they tend to add compatibility and take some away at same time

i did have one gigabyte board a few years ago. it didn't oc well but other then that it was great as well.
