Any step is a step in the right direction. Looks like a 20350 has my name on it! Bout damn time the cache doubled.

I would like to know what kind of performance increase the extra cache will make. I don't think there is anything that AMD can come out with that will be even close to match Intel and the Core i7.

AMD is going to have to make these pretty DAMN cheap for anyone to consider getting one.

I was always a big AMD guy so hopefully AMD's CPU division will take after it's GPU division and release something that will bring them back into the high end market.

Make sure you do your research on motherboard compatabilities before jumping onto one of the newer Phenoms.

Many folks have been having problems with the extreme examples resulting in blown caps minutes after dropping in the new proc.

I'm still holding my breath, but hopefully the new AM3 socket will bring the motherboard manufacturers back in line with the hardware requirements of the full AMD lineup of procs, rather than the current mish-mash of "will-it / won't-it be compatible" issues.

I'd really like to see something from AMD that would allow me to start supporting them again, but I'd much rather be spending my time doing research into motherboard performance, not trying to decifer whether or not a particular proc is suitable for a particular board.

They be dumb for trying to kill off AM2+ as quickly (quicker?) as the socket 939. Looks like I'll be skipping this next batch and get something next June. I don't like upgrading every 6 months.

I was one of the "disenfranchised" when they dropped S939 so quickly, and was quite pissed off at the time, but I see the move to AM3 as positive.

The current AM2, AM2+ lineup including problems with the different TDPs and incompatibilities relating to them is too confusing for folks in the know, let alone folks who don't have the resources to do proper research.

IMO, much better for AMD to make a fresh start with a new platform in order to remove any questions about what motherboard is required for each individual processor. As it stands... their current line is split between 3 different specs (AM2, AM2+, and the new higher TDP Phenoms).

With any luck, the new platform might coincide with a return to procs which are competative with Intel's offerings. (Rumours of pricing on the new intels have them quite expensive when they release).

i must agree with sswilson on this one. i have an am2+ board with an am2 cpu. the board i purchased has been documented to catch fire when a cpu with a TDP of >100W installed. this means i can't use most Phenoms on my board even though it is technically capable of running them.
if i do end up needing a new motherboard to upgrade my cpu when the time comes i'll probably end up getting an intel setup. i haven't owned an intel of my own (except for my laptop) since the old family P3.

Catch fire eh? Sounds like a Sony under the bonnet! I think the last Intel CPU I owned personally for a "gaming box" was a 486 DX2/66...Wow I've been an AMD fanboy for 18 years :P

The K6-series was a good effort by AMD and that's when I seriously started looking at them. It wasn't until the Thunderbirds when I jumped aboard but my cousins had a K6 system that was quite cheap at the time and performed fine... other than the TurtleBeach Sound Card they had that seemed to have conflicts with every game they tried installing I mean. :)

The K6 was a decent attempt that worked well for most applications. That said... it wasn't perfect in that it didn't cover all of the bases.

My first attempt at ripping MP3s was on a K6 chip, and because of some missing instruction sets it took something like 30 minutes to do a 5 minute song. :)

Haha, ya they didn't have an implementation of MMX on those chips so it had to brute force a lot of encoding/decoding, which obviously wasn't great.
