I just read its done on a custom mobo..so chances are no home user going to get 7Ghz.

just the same thats a sick clock speed.

Read the article;

Record was for AMD's Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor, not with a...but that is not even true.

Here is a link to the record setting MHz speeds as validated by CPU-Z.

http://valid.canardpc.com/records.php

If you notice in the third section down, the fastest Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor is at 7127.85MHz

The motherboard is not custom, the workbench is a custom AMD job.

Andrew Yang currently holds the 3DM06 record, so where is the compare url from Quakecon? LOL

http://service.futuremark.com/resultCom ... ultType=14

I love reading the various claims by some of these reporters and PR men.

sorry, but even at quakecon, one needs to provide a compare URL.

That's almost comparable of a i7 at 4.2

Ok ok... i7 @ 4.4 :)

What impresses me is for the AMD K-10 speeds to be well above the i7 speeds. Regardless of design, Mhz is MHz and says much more about quality.

But at the same time in the average processors you get off the shelf you get better overclockability on the average equipment (i7 wise)

I know this is not totally true as well because there are a few people i seen who have recieved shotty i7 cpus as well.

Personally I wouldn't take the MAXIMUM overclockability to heart though. Especially when it comes to super cherry picked cpus, boards, memory, cooling, etc.

No one can really afford to do the uber clocking anyways :P

Where does intel sit in the overclocking race? Or are they sitting this one out :P

You're right Skiman, I read the article wrong, it is a custom platform, not the board. Things kinda got blurry when I started dry humping the screen when I saw those numbers.

Think I am going to spend a little more time on my overclock to see if I can squeeze 4Ghz out of it :P something to do on my day off tomorrow. Anyone got any liquid nitrogen? hehe

I think realistically your best chance of sealing a 4ghz deal is a boreas or a elite

well I am going to try it on air first. If its stable but too hot for my liking I will clock it back to 3.825. Cant really justify the money on liquid for ~200Mhz increase over my V8. As suggested in another post, I am going to hit a wall around this point anyways so I am going to play with it some and see what happens.

Does the requirement for your 4.0 Ghz quest require fully functional hardware and OS, or just for benching purposes?

If the later, you can easily disable some not essential hardware via the bios, and shutdown some window services to gain that 200MHz.

Last week, I installed Win 7 but have yet to give it a full OC workout. Vista was stable on a 30 multi, while Win7 is stable on a 31 multi at the same voltage settings.
