Socket-AM3 Phenom II parts will also work in Socket-AM2+ motherboards, the two are pin-compatible. When in an AM2+ board, these upcoming Phenom II processors will work in DDR2 mode, but when in an AM3 board they will work in DDR3 mode.

that's just about all i needed to see.

I'm actually impressed that a chip with an onboard memory controller is able to use those two different versions of ram like that depending on the board it's in. It may not be an i7 killer but support like this along with a much cheaper platform (motherboard/ram combinations) make it fairly attractive alternative imo.

i7 killer=doubt it

But as always, AMD is doing all the right things in the right places. Backwards compatibility is becoming more and more essential as new CPU production is becoming more vast and varied

MB has the 920 and 940 parts listed at 324 and 380 respectively. Not availble now, though, oh well.

I dunno if it's worth waiting for the AM3 part since I have no idea if I actually want to go the DDR3 route or not. My motherboard (M3A32MVP Deluxe) supports the 920 and 940 CPU's but I have no idea (nor Asus I bet hah) if the AM3 cpu's will work better, if at all, irregardless of what sites say what. Call me jaded.

I have 8GB of ram but I'm still running XP Pro (32bit), I have no interest in installing Vista, nor taking out 2 sticks of ram hah. I am waiting until Windblows 7 to try again. 3GHz+ quad unlocked should be sufficient anyways.

I don't even know where this post is going anyways, as I'm going to get the 940. You only live once heh.

Another great thing about backwards compatibility:

Get the new chip, then when you want ddr3 grab a new board to compliment it.

At the time, I was going to do the Vista thang, but it offered nothing useful I could find except for running Vantage, and Windows doesn't seem to care about having all the extra ram stuck in there, so I I'm not in any hurry to yank it out heh. XP 64bit is total junk, so I'm not going there.

Oh ok, fair enough then. I just thought you might have missed the many many (many) memo's on this topic that are all over the net and here. :)

$380 for a 940, $249 for a Q6600, hmmm

Has there been any realistic postings of OC results? IIRC Phenom was supposed to be this awesome OC'er, and in reality it was a total lemon.
