So it's recently come to my attention that I haven't really done any system upgrades in two years.
Time to refresh this beast.

The old:
AMD FX8120 | ASUS M5A97 | 4x2GB SuperTalent/Corsair XMS3 | Sapphire 6950 2GB | Corsair Force 3 240GB | 4x1TB WD Black RAID10 | Seasonic 620W Modular | Antec 902 V3

The current:
Intel i7 4790 | Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3P | 2x8GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 | Zotac GTX760 4GB | Samsung 840 EVO 250GB | 2x3TB WD Red RAID1 | Seasonic 620W Modular | Fractal Design Arc XL

Changelog:
Feb. 22, 2014 - Changed the 4x1TB Black RAID10 for 2x3TB Red RAID1.
Mar. 1, 2014 - 2x8GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 replaces the 4x2GB of mismatched RAM.
Mar. 8, 2014 - Samsung 840 EVO 250GB replaces the Corsair Force 3 240GB that unexpectedly took a permanent vacation.
Mar. 22, 2014 - Impulse buy. Got a Zotac GTX760.
Oct. 17, 2015 - i7 4790, Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3P, Fractal Design Arc XL

Next Change:
Power Supply (unknown model) OR Motherboard (unknown model) AND I7 4770

The objective is cooler and faster.

The SSD is still doing great. Going on three years old and still working like brand new.

Thermaltake Big Typhoon for the CPU cooler. Been using it since my Athlon64 2800+ days. Still doing a half decent job given that it's contending with a system that heats my entire apartment in the middle of winter. haha

Yeah, my Jesusbox still puts out a lot of heat but I think I'm doing good with my gamer. Not having a 300W monster video card and LED monitor helps a lot.

It's bad but I'm hoping this is the year in which a game comes out that I finally can't play well enough that I can justify a new system for. There are games out now that would be unplayable on what I have but since I'm not really into FPS's it hasn't really affected me. I'm finishing up Darksiders and then I have Kingdoms of Amalaur (spelling?), so both those are fine, but Watchdogs is looking pretty good so that might be the game.

I'm encoding more HD videos lately, taken from my GoPro Hero3+, so it would be nice to get a speed boost for that but it's not needed really. My system might take 2 hours to encode something that a newer chip would take 20 minutes for, but at the end of the day the final result is the same so it's harder to justify it.

I was hoping the new AMD Kaveri chips would be a bit more impressive when paired up with a GPU, because of the HSA addition, but that still seems to be a bit of a pipe dream realizing those improvements. I was thinking an R9 270X would be my next video card but they seem to be high in price due to the extra demand by Bitcoin miners so if I was looking now I would probably lean towards the lower power, decently priced, GeForce 750 Ti's.

Anyway, sorry for the thread hijack but I figured this forum could use some additional discussion. ;)

That's a lot of hard drive space you have there now as well Monkey.

Discussion is more than welcome here!!
I'm looking towards nVidia as well for my video card replacement. I'm not mining and the miners are forcing the price of AMD cards through the roof. It's to the point that replacing what I have, as old as it is, is not worth it. Seems to be a little more gaming bang/buck in the nVidia side of the fence for the first time in a lot of years.
Not sure which card I'll get though. It's my last piece of the replacement puzzle. The 750 Ti looks interesting, but not sure if it's worth buying over my 6950.
Thinking back on it; the last brand new nVidia card I bought was the FX5200. I've been mostly ATI/AMD since. I did buy a refurb 7900GT and a used 6600GT, but I didn't have either of those for very long before going back to ATI/AMD.

As of tonight my system won't boot and the SSD is throwing bad sectors at me in every single chkdsk thrown at it.
I was able to get it to somewhat boot into windows at one point, but most of the system files were missing so nothing actually worked.
A new SSD wasn't actually on the radar, but now it's being promoted to a Saturday purchase as long as the guys have a 240GB one in stock. If they don't then it'll be at least a week with no desktop.

I had a scare last weekend, thought my SD blew up (yay OCZ hah). Turns out my SATA ports on my mobo are now wonky.

New hard drive is in.
Not the tedium of a new install and all the updates.

I have an OCZ drive as well (Vertex 3) but so far so good. I also tried my luck by getting a Seagate disk drive a few years ago (I usually always go Western Digital), but that's been going fine as well. I also keep a backup drive in a fireproof/waterproof safe since I don't really trust any one drive enough for all my photos and videos.

Ha! But no. I actually have zero pr0n on my drives. I just happen to be into photography and shooting dumb GoPro videos is all.

Got myself a GTX760 today. Will be installing tomorrow.
Faster and less power hungry than my Radeon 6950 if the reviews are to be believed.
This is the first brand new nVidia card I've bought since my FX5200 way back in the day. The "Dawn of Cinematic Computing" it was not. haha.

Ok, so this project is slightly on hold.
I am currently piecing together a component home theatre system. Operation "annoy the neighbours" is on in full force.
I have a 7.1 receiver and a set of bookshelf speakers up and going now. I have a centre channel on the way. Then I'll be ordering a set of tower speakers and another set of bookshelf speakers to make this a 7.0 system. The sub will come after I'm no longer an apartment dweller.
