Need some input on aliant and eastlink....
I am currently on eastlink and i am having horrible customer service issues...along with issues playin online when someone else is surfin in the house

My big thing is if I switch to Aliant...am I going to experience the same high ping issues with basic internet surfing and gaming at the same time?
I know the d/l will not be as great..( or anywhere close by the looks of things) but as long as I can actually play a game online and have someone else in the house surf at the same time I will be happy.
If anyone has any input on this before I decide, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm with Aliant, and have the same problem, granted, it's probably the same with any ISP unless you have a high bandwidth connection.

We've always had good customer service with Aliant; they've always been very friendly to us. Not sure if that's the same with everyone, but for what it's worth, that's been my experience with them. :)

Aliant = lag

Been there, done that, I'd stick with weaklink.

I've been very happy with Eastlink, until recently.
The last.. week or so? my torrents have been considerably slower. I used to max out my connection, full 15/1, but since last week, I haven't been able to break 500kb/s down, and barely over 30kb/s up.

Did they suddenly start throttling? Or, get a better throttling method?

Swap your modem at the desk.

Just call eastlink and say your connection is intermittent.

Ot jus bring the modem and argue a little.

thx for the opinions..from what I have been reading...aliant is not going to do anything better.
I think my best bet is to take my modem in as Top said, and maybe bite the bullet and get a second connection. That is probably gonna be the only way I will get away with multiple users on at the same time.
I've actually tried to get my modem checked several times...but every time the tech came out it worked fine..(or so they said).
as for throttling...I can never remember actually having any more then 50k(MAX) upload...and I never get any more then 600 down...so maybe it is just my modem...so hopefully I can get it switched Monday and see what happens.

norm on average is 100 kmb/s upload max
1,500 down (sometimes more)

They really like to throttle the upload.

Unless you have more splitters than me (in which I highly doubt you don't) I wouldn't bother doing dual connections. Been there and to be honest. It's not worth the money. It's just shit we ahve to deal with.

I know I get severe latency spikes around 9-930pm. And from my previous post it's most likely traffic shaping that goes on during a peak change in bandwidth from users.

But yeah. All in all. I owuld just suggest turning your modem in. The eastlink tech's will give you a serial for the modem to plug in but with the new software/systems they have it will automatically detect your new cable modem.

It's really hit and miss with me. I'm usually gaming on my pc and my sister is streaming video pretty much all day and I rarely get lag spikes.

When I do get them it is more than likely do to traffic shaping, as eastlink has really went downhill over the last few years with their throttling.

Don't torrent on one PC and expect to get a fast connection on the other. Torrenting kills you connection. It's so bad for me that when I'm torrenting on my gaming pc, messages don't go through in Xfire or Msn and sometimes it just signs them out.

You could look at investing in business level packages from eastlink, in which less traffic shaping occurs and you get a static ip. Just something to consider.

as a question to those here who are having lag spikes, torrent troubles, etc.; are you currently assigned an IP that starts with 208.xxx.xxx.xxx? Ever since I got an IP starting with 208 i have been experiencing slow torrents, frequent MSN disconnects, and the eastlink speedtest that links to DSL reports seems to think i'm in Atlanta, Georgia using Speakeasy DSL service :?

I'm not. I'm on 71.x.x.x. I got a new router today, and that seems to be helping my torrenting a bit, but there hasn't been anything interesting out to test it with, yet.

I'm with eastlink and I'm happy with the service.

I was with MTT and was a tester for the MPowered back in 1998 and kept the service until 2006 or so. I had the uncapped Paradyne modem from the beta test and they eventually screamed and hollered to get it back to the point of threatening to even cut off my telephone if I didn't return it.

My speeds are good, even with the whole family doing things online concurrently.

I've found ping times in Halifax have always been an issue. Ever try running tracert to see the routes taken from Halifax to any destination (of your choice)? It just does not make sense to see the packets routes, regardless of service provider.

I have no experience with either in the city. Where I live out in the boonies and I have aliant ultra and my gf has eastlink 15. Believe it or not aliant is more reliable. She has had a lot more trouble than I have with speeds up and down and times online gaming is completely out of the question, my pings are much more consistent and I can always download torrents(yes even the same torrent at the same time)faster than her no matter the time of day. When it comes to downloading through http though she can kick my ass as she'll get about 12mb and I max out at 5.5-6mb.

Lots of people around here have left eastlink and gone to aliant .. however aliant was just put through in the last few years so maybe newer equipment than some places that have had it for a long time makes the difference.
