looking at two cpu's but wich one is really the faster of the two:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz $125
AMD Phenom X4 9850 2.5GHz $215

I wold just bite the bullet and grab the x2

depends on the threading but overall the 3.2 for games and all that jazz.

and that will require a new mobo and im not looking to change that right now so my best bet is the 3.2 dual core then.

Not necessarily depends on what model it is the new AM3 core may on it...Or at least when the AM3 models come out the price will drop on all existing models. But it all depends on how quickly you want it, I guess.

the M3A's are AM2+ boards and the PhenomII 920 and 940 are AM2+ chips so your motherboard will support 'em no problem.
