Note to anyone feeling like an impulsive purchase: The PS3 is a folding MONSTER. I started folding with mine on Tuesday, and it's cruising along. My PPD is up over 1100 now I believe! I kind of want another PS3... Point being; if anyone wants a folding rig, rather than spend a few hundred dollars on a PC, just get a PS3. I think FS has a sale on right now too.

Figured that I would put my spare CPU cycles to good use and start this up again. Let's see how far my small group of crunchers can take me.

My Folding Farm:

System 1:(Running GPU Client)
1 Core i7 920 @ stock.
6gigs DDR3
HD4870 @ Stock

System 2:
2.2ghz Macbook Pro
4 gigs DDR2
8600GT 128 mb

System 3:
PS3

System 4:
Lenovo Ideapad S10 Netbook
Atom 1.6ghz
1 gig DDR2

System 5:
Dell mini 9 Netbook
Atom 1.6ghz
1 gig DDR2

I was wondering...with the core i7 system, should I be running the GPU client or the SMP client? I'm guessing the GPU client would produce more per day than the SMP. Can you run both at the same time?

Yea, I will see how much it will cost me. Anyone have an idea on the cost of running similar systems doing this?

I agree with steve-o here.

It will significantly raise your annual bill

I've seen numbers that say 300$ for an OC'd i7 per year (that's 24/7). We're talking over 272W for an i7 system (example in pic) which is 281$ or so a year based on current nspower rates. That's running prime 95 and not a GPU folding client, which would probably add 50% to that number. (PS3 is 200W by itself, but apparently is awesome at crunching http://www.hardcoreware.net/ps3-power-usage-during-foldinghome/)

And that's just one computer, so for 5 going no-stop I'd have to say well over 720$ a year, or 60$ a month just to do some thankless job of folding. Not to mention the environmental cost!
