Looks like Home Premium is getting a 10% price cut when compared to Vista, and there are some deals if you pre-order as well. At $65 for a pre-ordered OEM copy I would actually upgrade my desktop from XP finally.

I pre-ordered Home Professional for $64. I guess the pre-order deal is 50% off regular price so I figured I'd pounce now rather than pay $129 later.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) versions are full os's meant for system builders. Only real difference is no fancy box. Upgrades are only available as Reatil box's.

PM sent - for anyone else wondering the offer is for "most major retailers" so you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding it somewhere.

Yes, it's only an upgrade but you're able to do a fresh install from it and my version of XP is legit so it's no big deal for me.

As for it being a bad deal:

The article above doesn't even factor in this 50% off pre-ordering discount making it even sweeter. So unless you pirate it or are able to get a student discount Windows has never been cheaper.

its still very cheap by comparison to other os launches.

but since when did they start producing oem upgrades???
doesn't make any sense considering oem's are intended for new builds.

From my understanding that $64 was for a retail upgrade, not an OEM. I know the product pictures can't always be trusted but it did show a box rather than just a DVD or a DVD slip/case which would be what I'd expect if it was OEM.

Ya, I just checked and that was my bad on the original post. In the link it says that the OEM prices are lower and then it goes on to talk about the upgrade pricing deal but they aren't the same thing.

i await the OEM release with much anticipation. the upgrade prices are quite tempting, but i'm not convinced if it's worth it to get the upgrade version or not...
