I max my connection in seconds, on every torrent. Movies take minutes to download, not hours. Usenet is good, but torrents are much easier to manage. Though, I guess if you're not into seeding then Usenet's where it's at.
Edit: As for security/throttling, use non-standard ports and force encryption. Try to find a tracker than supports SSL. There's not many around though. (Again, RIP ScT)
I've been on a few private torrent sites and to be honest, I always had trouble keeping my ratio up. I like to download at 1700kb/s and not leave my computer on 24/7 while hoping that people download off me at a max of 128kb/s. Both of my computers draw too much power for that lol.
Usenet isn't that much harder to manage, once you learn how to set it up. It's more or less the same as any torrent client. Download a file, client opens it up and begins downloading to your default download folder. Extract when finish and enjoy.
