Nothing new, just a larger version of the iPod Touch. Retails from 500 to 830$ US, so I guess 600 to 900$ CDN.

That's a big iPod or a tiny Steve Jobs :)

I'm glad they made UI changes to the OS they used instead of just slapping OSX on it. I think that's one of the main reasons a lot of tablets/UPC's failed in the past. Tablets are a different way of working so shouldn't they have a different UI to accommodate this the best? Microsoft obviously hasn't agreed with this in the past and I remember seeing several UPC's with ~5" screens and they wanted you to use a stylus to poke this super tiny Start Menu button.

Anyways, I still personally don't care for the idea of tablet/touch screen computers but I'm glad they're at least taking them in the right direction for people who may.

So many things that Apple did wrong with this.

Steve Jobs boasted about it being better then a Smartphone or netbook and laptops yet it fails is so many areas.

Like the iTouch and iPhone it cannot multi-task. Thus what good does that 1GHz Apple A4 CPU do? They boast that it is great for video playback and photo presentation yet there is no expandable memory or card reader built in. (Its part of the Camera Connection Kit...which means more $$$ for Apple to do that). Also present is the lack of video output in any form

They crippled it by using the iTouch and iPhone OS. This has a 10" display...not a 5" one so there is no reason not to change OS X abit...hell they had to patch OS X cause it was running so great on Dell Minis! Obviously not alot of changes required there. Also OS based is that the keyboard input is embedded in the apps. If you want what is essentially Word or Excel its $10 for EACH one.

It is labelled as being better then a netbook or laptop yet there is ZERO Flash support, meaning YouTube and 1/2 the websites out there wont work. Hell even in Steve Job's demo of it the New York Times website has a Flash error on it. It also lacks tab browsing and you cant run multiple windows at once.

So it seems that Apple is once again trying to go for those without a smartphone or netbook/laptop by offering a low 'Apple' priced product with the rest of the price coming in from any apps, ebooks or music downloaded to it. Add in the fact that with the 3G model (which is $629US for the 16GB one) its $30/month for unlimited downloads this just becomes what Apple hopes is a big money grab.

SideWinderDX

PS - the iPad jokes coming out are already great too! lol

- No Camera : There is no front-facing camera for video conferencing, and there is no back-facing camera for taking photos. This is a major omit from the device. Hell, most netbooks and smartphones have a camera or two.

- No multitasking: You cannot run multiple apps at the same time. To make this a useful device, it needs to be able to do things like run Last.fm while tweeting. This is one we hope Apple will fix with a future iPhone OS update, but for now it can’t run multiple apps.

- No HDMI Output: You can’t plug your iPad into your TV.

- No USB port: You can’t plug in your favorite keyboard into the device…or anything else, really. It will plug into your computer via the same cord you charge iPhones and iPod touches with.

Sorry but to the fans of everything apple - this IPAD with wings sucks the big one.

I am also weary about it handling HD video. I doubt very much it will handle 1080p. no flash support - yeah that equals alot of ticked off people.

pfft - useless.

I just want to mention my comment about not slapping OSX on there was made before I had read any technical specs... I basically just looked at the image Steve-O posted and said "Hey, that's different than OSX so they must have designed it from scratch" but I guess not. So it looks like my big reason for "Why Tablets Fail" still applies to this as they've taken an OS they've designed for something else in mind and tried to "make it work" for tablets.

After reading more about this as well I don't think it can really be compared to a netbook per say as a netbook is a computer and this is more of an appliance.

Oh, and as for the lack of Flash I personally see that as a good thing. The quicker we dump Flash and start using HTML5 the better and YouTube and Vimeo will be switching to that soon hopefully.

Actually, this isn't designed to watch movies, because it isn't in a widescreen format. Black bars on the top and bottom and a distraction and a waste of space.

I don't actually think they designed this with any market segment in mind. It is just a freaking big iPod touch!

That picture on the very top isn't an iPod, it's what it SHOULD have looked like until a whole whack of corners we cut. I might have gotten that version, I WON'T be getting the actual thing.

The iPad jokes were out there years ago. Maybe they should have called it the iNewton, it will probably be as successful.

"Eat up Martha"

e-Props for anyone who remembers where that Newton joke came from. ;)

It doesn't fill niche. It's too big to be easily portable like an iPod touch or iPhone, and it lacks the hardware to be a laptop replacement. Jailbreaking will save you from software-side problems like multitasking, but it can't change the product.

Maybe if Apple had more of these.

best double entendre i've seen yet:

"...Or skip G3 and use WiMax, so you can get the WiMax iPad"

Apparently google translates iPad in Arabic into "Aye Bad" or "Any Bad". Excellent Smithers!

Of course anyone who parks a car like that in any parking spot they want deserves to be shiit on on a daily basis!
