Hey Ski

I did some reading on thermal compounds, performance and the like. Thermal compounds are at best an insulator but its not as bad as air pockets would be(when not using any). The simple compound is filled with elements like silver which is thought to be an excellent conductor of heat. The compound is more or less a medium to keep it in place.

Apparently what I was seeing on earlier threads was true about diamond dust. It works very well in regards to transferring heat. But there was another compound thats man made that is several hundred times better than that and ~3000 times better than any regular thermal compound. (Can't remember the name but it had Graphite in it)

Days ago with this in mind I got pretty tempted to do some lapping. So as a test, I am going to lap the Heat Sink on the HTPC. Then Lap the cpu and record the results. Shaving down the peaks would help and less compound would be needed. Less insulating has to be a good thing.

I picked up the latest CPU magazine today. In it was an article comparing HDD's - the spinning kind. The WD caviar black 2TB drive is faster than the 300G velo. insane.
