Thinking about spending $10 more/month to get faster speeds from eastlink. Does anyone have this already - is the speed difference noticeable?

Would using a wifi router (802.11g) be a bottleneck?

4 MB/sec download would be nice in theory, but with eastlink is it reality?

Yes.

You will be fine.

Yes. But remember your speeds depend on the weakest conditions of what you are connecting to.

There is no cap yet.

So no.

The reason is because Eastlink has not implemented any software to monitor bandwidth. They are still deciding how to do it.

They are thinking server side or client side and how the user can view it. This will take a few months I am assuming.

The answers provided to you are from me calling Eastlink. As well as personal usage of the product.

Upgrade just to get the new cable modem, and whenever they actually start metering the service, switch right back to 15mb service (which isn't metered)...stupid easy! I switched back to 15mb.

Once again, I beg you all to read the previous thread on this topic.

tell them to extend your free trial with it. They are pretty flexible if you are going to go the extra mile or leave them.

I got the new modem today, just hooked it up and ran some speed tests here:
http://www.speedtest.net/

I've tried about 10 different servers in North America and my average dl speed is only about 7mb/s.
average ping is ~ 35ms

I'm using a trendnet router ->netgear switch ->laptop (all wired)

How fast is your connection?

I just ran the the test. I got 29.68 mb/s and 1.69 mb/s for dl. avg ping was 9 ms. i thinks thats pretty damn good. I think the $10 boost is worth it

I tried connecting my laptop directly to the cable modem and got 30mb/s to Truro, but my average for US servers is still <10mb/s. European servers ~<5mb/s. Averaged about 25mb/s on a Ubuntu torrent.

^^^^that's directly from the cable modem to laptop.

The torrent went from 3.5MB/s to 0.6MB/s when I went through the router using wifi (G).
and then up to about 1.2MB/s over ethernet cable.

So I guess my (Trendnet) router sucks. Or my ethernet cables all suck?

I'll check the settings on the router, but I'm *pretty sure* that I haven't capped myself.
Any suggestions welcome.

I'll be sending this to eastlink.
Mike

I seem to be making some progress - changed a bunch of network adapter settings in device manager. How do my settings look?
