I have a Linksys WRT54G (basically the non-Linux version of that one) and it works fine on Eastlink and I like it quite a bit.

I wonder if there could be something wrong with this Eastlink modem perhaps? I've tried 3 different dlink routers and one older linksys and I have the same problem on all of them. I took one router off a guys EL connection and tried it and I also tried my newsgroup server on his setup and no problems there so this is specific to my connection/modem.

Update: Borrowed a Dlink DI-524 router from my girlfriend and low and behold it works fine. I updated the firmware and speeds are fine and no disconnects anymore. Hard to believe a router from 2005 works better than $130 routers I have purchased lately.

back home i had an ASUS RT-N12 hooked up and it worked fine for me except when running torrents or skype. what i had to do was change the firewall setting "Enable DoS protection?" to Yes and everything them worked perfectly. However, that router would not hold its settings for longer than 24 hours. When i moved out i bought a new router and left my mom with that one not knowing it would screw with skype. so on my last visit home i had to hook up my old dlink di-624 (bought in 2004) and that worked perfectly. however, when i go home to visit i want wireless for my laptop, so i set up the N12 router as an access point and that works perfectly.

my points?
1. check the firewall setting for the new routers you have
2. get a switch and then get a router that can act as a wireless access point or just get a regular wireless acces point instead.

Yeah i've tried changing settings in the firewall and a whole bunch of other stuff. Still the same thing .. I regret moving because where I was at before I had a super stable 7mbit aliant connection that worked perfect. In 5 years only trouble I ever had was when a tree fell on a line and caused problems for bout 3 days till they got it fixed. I miss it. lol I'm NOT a fan of Eastlink this is damn aggravating. Bout ready to fry this modem so EL will have to replace it and see if that will fix my problem. Got to be something in the modem .. has to be there is nothing else left.

Just a lil update here. I found a router that would allow me access to all websites and to be able to download from my newsgroups server so I thought all was well till it seems almost everyday I loose connection to the internet completely and need to cycle power to the router and modem. So I called EL and they came and checked speeds which are always good and said everything was ok and left. So I tried a switch and still ended up with disconnects .. so at this point I'm at a complete loss and don't know what to do. Any suggestions besides frying this mofo'ing modem and hopeing a new one will fix it?

Try a different PC to download if possible. If it's still happening, I'd call weaklink and ask to speak to a manager and state that their technicians are running you in circles when it is very obvious that there is a problem with your internet service. You might squeeze a little compensation out of them and will force them to replace your modem.

I've tried 3 different pc's and I have cured the downloading problem it's the random disconnects I'm still having the problems with. As soon as work slows down I'm going to have to get onto them heavily. I'm never around in the day right now for a tech to come out so in a couple weeks or so I'm going to have to get busy calling them and complaining.

I quit using D-link due to this occurance.

Went with cisco products and happier than ever!

Not using Dlink anymore .. have since used Linksys and TP-Link and Belkin .. of which the TP-Link has been the best which I found a bit odd. Actually the switch I used was a Cisco but it was just a loan from a friend of mine for a couple days.
