CES is in the air, so this is being the thread dedicated to the wonderfully nerdtastic event.

First up: Apparently this is a very quickly moving MSI 990FX chipset for the new Bulldozery AM3+ chips. Unfortunately no more info yet...

And Asus has a bunch of new things that start with the letter "E", have an "E" in the middle and end with an "E".

Waiting on some ASUS P67 boards....

Not only a new socket, but 2 new sockets! And I think 6 different chipsets.

I think it's great when a company can keep a socket around for a while but to think AMD does this while Intel does not is a bit delusional imo.

im just saying that coming out with several sockets at once is a little on the retarded side.

Ya, I agree but AMD did it with S754 and S940 for their low and high-end chips at the time. I would think it would be cheaper for the companies to just produce one socket that can accommodate both their chips, even if it means the low end ones have missing or unused contacts on them, but then again I'm not an engineer or someone in marketing.

There are certain LGA775 CPU's (Core2Duos come to mind) that are not compatible with some older LGA775 motherboards, as I recallish, as time went by.

granted with the older amd sockets etc but that was years ago. Intel is still doing it.

Its stupid for them to release three new sockets. How is one supposed to upgrade - why make it that hard for the consumer. its a dumbass move.

Do I need to mention that Socket M, Socket P, Socket T, Socket J, LGA 1156, LGA 1366
, BGA 965, 988, 1288, 1567, 478, 479, 604 all came out while LGA775 was around (maybe even a few others)...

I do this only to show that any list of things can be made to prove whatever point, even though most of those sockets have different purposes (ie: server, laptop)

Another thing to consider is how much of the market there is for people who want to upgrade just their CPU. We're enthusiasts here, and I'm sure for every one of us there are 10 people/business that buy a computer, use it until it stops working or is too slow, and then repeats this process. To them it doesn't matter what socket it's using.
