Here is WD's reply

Dear Dave,

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Ralph B.

I apologize, but we do not support third party programs associated with testing performance of Western Digital hard drives. I can inform you that several independent review websites regularly review and test our hard drives with numerous utilities. I would suggest building a like system outlined by one of these websites and using the described utilities to benchmark the hard drive. These websites include: "Tom's Hardware," "Extreme Tech Weekly," and "Storage Review".

Performance is relative to many factors including, but not limited to how the drive is set up, what function the drive performs, and the data currently on the drive. For more information regarding benchmarking, please see the information in the link below.

Answer Title: Benchmarking programs indicate that my hard drive is performing slower than expected.

If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.

Sincerely,
Ralph B

what gets me is that my results are almost opposite of what the review sites get. my Black performance is their blue performance and their blue performance is my black performance...

Same here MD .. I wouldn't have know before cuz all I had was 2 blacks then I got the blue and seagate and while transfering files between those 2 drives I noticed the transfer rate was the fastest I had seen. So I decided to do some benchmarks and you see the result in my original post.

If these benches are true then the only reason to pay extra for a black over a blue would be the 5 year warranty over the 3year blue's.

Through the luck of drive failures my OS is actually on my smaller BLUE, the Black is just extra storage and VISTA  . Heck even that craptacular 7200.11 Seagate was faster than the black. I think I might go back to Samsung the next time I need a drive.
