Personally, I have noticed a recent trend of applied knowledge and experience as a preference over certification.

A++ is not as useful nor desired as it used to be.

A good portfolio and proven success speak much higher than certification.

I've never received any sort of certification in the IT field and have secured high profile IT positions in numerous jobs based on a proven track record of success and ability to sell my skills.

My last IT position was a network administrator for a very large and prestigious entity.

Not saying certification should be bypassed in any way. I'm saying that proven skills are becoming a more desired trait than a piece of paper saying you're capable of doing a job.

Here's an example. Joe writes code for ACME Industries. He has all major certifications in his field. His work is acceptable. Sanjay, an 8 year old coder from Nicuragua, is capable of coding more efficiently than Joe, because where Joe studied for his certification, Sanjay was a true enthusiast up to date with the latest coding standards and was much more enthusiastic.

Just my take on it. Good luck in which ever endeavor you choose.

EDIT: I didn't read any of the responses in this thread before posting and it's funny to see mostly everyone has been in the same boat as myself.
