And divulged abosolutely nothing useful. But they say 2013!

Oh and some other stuff that may or may not be a surprise:

Quote:
Main Processor Single-chip custom processor
CPU : x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores
GPU : 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD next-generation Radeon™ based graphics engine
Memory GDDR5 8GB
Hard Disk Drive Built-in
Optical Drive
(read only)
BD 6xCAV
DVD 8xCAV
I/O Super-Speed USB (USB 3.0) 、AUX
Communication Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T)
IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth® 2.1 (EDR)
AV output HDMI
Analog-AV out
Digital Output (optical)

The PS4 system architecture is distinguished by its high performance and ease of
development. PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.
The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been enhanced in a number of ways, principally to allow for easier use of the GPU for general purpose computing (GPGPU) such as physics simulation. The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two.
PS4 is equipped with 8 GB of unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. GDDR5 is used for this memory, giving the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and providing a further boost to graphics performance.

So it looks like OpenCL is going to be the defacto standard in physics for the next little while, since all 3 consoles (WiiU, PS4 and XboxNext(?)) use AMD GPGPU functionality.

Not that Physix from team green is bad, just that being closed and useless finally bites them in the arse!

Also apparently the whole SONY IS KILLING THE USED GAMES MARKET is bunk and they've said they arn't doing it...Yeah well duhhh, you basically would have stopped anybody who plays sports games to never ever buy it otherwise!

I remember hearing the PS3 was a pain to develop for so it sounds like they're trying to improve on that this time around. Also, AMD's decision to focus on a CPU/GPU merge seems to be paying off for them in the console market. I'm not sure if the console makers see this as the future or if they just like the idea of having a single company to deal with when pairing these components together but either way it seems to be working out for AMD.

A quick look at the Wikipedia Entry for AMD APU (Fusion) shows the 2014 line up as having "'heterogeneous cores' capable of processing both CPU and GPU work automatically" so I guess that's the direction they plan to take for future PC's as well:

Yeah, they had to drop the "fusion" moniker due to trademarks or patents or some such nonsense!

I'd like to see that 8 core CPGPGPU thingy with 8GB shared GDDR5 memory.

I can almost see them doing the NB/SB/CPU/GPU on one die and then 4 2GB ram chips or whatever. That's a pretty small package.

Ya, I wouldn't mind seeing that as well.

Intel and AMD seem to be going at this problem from different angles too. Intel is trying to add GPU-like features to their CPU, while AMD appears to be adding CPU-like features to their GPU. In this case I actually think AMD's plan will work out better in the long run but at the same time I feel like Intel is holding back.

You mean Intel just doesn't give a darn :P
(As shown by their total incompetence in every GPU they ever made.)

Sort of. Their CPU's are good and I feel like if AMD was putting up more of a fight on that front that Intel would pull a few aces from their sleeves, but as it is they are just sitting back and cashing in on their current designs. They are however trying to improve their GPU's and failing yes.

In order to fail they would have had to succeed at it at some point :P

It depends on how you look at it I guess. When I see the newer Intel CPU's with embedded GPU's I don't think "I can game on this". I think, 95% of the people using computers who don't game can use this to get the visual improvements on Windows 7 and watch full screen HD movies without issue. So in that regard they're fine. To be honest I see the AMD CPU's like this as well even if their GPU's are better. :-\
