Now that more dets have surfaced I thought we'd see some discussion here about it.

My point form thoughts are:

  • The XBox One looks nicer. Even though people say the both look like a VCR I think the XBox One looks good and the PS4 looks kind of... funky in not so good of a way. A minor point but I thought I would mention it.
  • The PS4 beats it in price and hardware obviously, but I'm not sure how much of a real world difference it will make. If studios are designing games to work on both and they just make something that works on the lowest common denominator than does it really matter in the long run?
  • Sony really stuck it to Microsoft about the whole "always connected" and "how to trade games" bits, but apparently the used game system could be changed if any third party developer wants to add DRM to their games, so I would say that point is really in the air until we see what developers do.
  • I think Skype through the XBox One is a pretty neat feature and I hope Sony gets something similar when adding the "Eye", but something tells me the Sony OS will be much harder to add it to than the Xbox; which is probably heavily rooted with Windows 8-ish source code.

Anyone else's thoughts?

Also, did people see what the other Microsoft rep said about customers who don't have a persistent internet connection and that they should get a XBox 360 instead? It seems like they didn't learn from their last mistake when they made a comment like that.

It wasn't just an M$ rep, it was the damn "President of the Interactive Entertainment Business" himself, Don Mattrick.

http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/31672-xbox-one-chief-says-xbox-for-offline-is-xbox-360

I read that a poll of like 80,000 people showed that 81% preferred the PS4 over the XBone.

MS canned that arse in charge of the Xbox division, and Ballmer is large and in charge (and throwing chairs!). Where did Don Mattrick go? That insane cesspool of gamedom, Zynga! Good riddance Don...

PS4 for me based on I have gone through 5 xbox 360's since launch and my 6th one has a dvd tray door that stick's shut.I had to buy a extra 360 to use as a spare while I have one sent in for fixing. My original ps3 is still alive and well and I expect it to be until I buy a ps4.Xbox one is being billed as an entertainment system and I don't want that I just want a dependable game machine that is all I ask of a next gen console.

So who is standing in line to grab a PS4 (double kudos if you reply to this while actually standing in line to buy one)?

I'm holding off for now. I have a PS3 and I love it, but I waited for the slim version and the price drop before I bought it. This also meant there was a good game selection and "Greatest Hits" available right away for me. I'm usually a year behind on the games I play anyway because they're cheaper that way and I know in advanced which ones are truly good after the marketing hype wears off. I have a few friends that buy the newest games right away and I really can't trust their opinion on them until at least 3-4 months after the release. ;)

The other reason is my computer really needs an upgrade at this point. I still seem to be squeezing by the minimum requirements for most of the games I've played but I know it's just a matter of time before they bump up again. Currently running a Core2Duo e8400, 4GB memory, and a 8800GTX (Akimbo 1GB).

On top of all of that my latest toy is a GoPro Hero3+ camera (had to return two of them due to an issue the early models have, but as soon as it fixed I'll be re-buying it), and having a faster CPU would be nice for encoding videos for that.

Holding off. Have 2 bikes to build and we know what happens to budgets. *KABOOM*

Played a PS4 this weekend (NBA 2k14 (I think that was the year?), Battlefield 4, and COD Ghosts) and I have to say I wasn't that impressed. I think it was mostly due to the launch games being more like PS3 ports than something that was developed first and foremost with the next gen consoles in mind... at least I hope that's it because otherwise it's going to be holding back graphics a lot over the next few years.

It is a total rework for PS3 to PS4 games (CELL -> AMD), I'm not surprised they look exactly the same. That and the P3S games now have 1080p instead of just 720p.

Different architectures but both versions of the game are probably written in the same language and then compiled/tweaked differently near the end in order to get them working on each system.

What I really meant by that comment though was more of the development before a specific architecture comes into play. If they knew they would be creating a game for both the PS3/XBox 360 and the PS4/XBox One than they'd probably make some choices along the way that meant that things would work on the older systems, but then not really showcase what the newer systems are capable of. I'm not saying they're dumb to do this, but they are developing for the lowest common denominator, and until they decide the last gen systems are no longer worth it than I don't think we'll see too many games that are that much of a step forward.

According to something from Amazon, if you wanted a PS4 by XMAS, then you won't get one unless you ordered before Nov 14th :P...

Roomie got a Xbone and Ryse/Forza 5 look pretty decent. He would have gotten a PS4 but it's lacking a nunchuck/mouse adapter that he uses for FPS. SO the vast majority is still CoD on P3S.
